Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Action 2017

"Scenarios of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services"

Guidelines for Proponents from the State of São Paulo, Brazil

RESEARCHERS MUST FOLLOW THE COMPLETE CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR DETAILS REGARDING APPLICATION, FUNDING, SELECTION CRITERIA, PROPOSAL PREPARATION AND SUBMISSION at: www.belmontforum.org/opportunities/#open

1 Introduction

Through this call, the Belmont Forum and BiodivERsA seek to promote innovative research for wiser decision-making, by developing scenarios of biodiversity change and its associated ecosystem services, resulting from the complex interaction of socio-economic changes and global environmental changes through collaborative, international, inter- and transdisciplinary research projects.

This call is supported by Belmont Forum selected funding agencies from different countries and also by BiodivERsA. 25 funding organisations from 22 countries are joining this call, the complete list of participants can be found at www.belmontforum.org/opportunities/#open

2 Scientific Research Topics

The Call will address the two following major (non-exclusive) priorities:

  • Development and application of scenarios of biodiversity and ecosystem services across spatial scales of relevance to multiple types of decisions

  • Consideration of multiple dimensions of biodiversity and ecosystem services in biodiversity scenarios

The call aims at supporting proposals that explicitly address a scenario dimension, taking into account the following definition of scenarios: “Scenarios of biodiversity and ecosystem services are the outputs of the combination of scenarios of indirect drivers and direct drivers - such as land use change, invasive alien species, overexploitation, climate change or pollution - and models of impacts of these drivers on biodiversity and ecosystem services.”

3 Grant Modality

Proposals should follow the overall conditions of Regular Research Awards (www.fapesp.br/137), observing the exceptionalities described at item 4.4 below.

4 Guidelines to Proponents

c. Funding should support proposals that combine significant contributions by scientists from at least three of the participating countries.

d. It is expected that applications to this call will be through trans-national research consortia as defined in the Belmont Forum call and FAPESP will fund the partner from the State of São Paulo, Brazil, of any successful collaborative proposal.
