FAPESP/SCRIPPS - Call for Proposals 2015

1. Introduction

The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), Brazil and The Scripps Research Institute (SCRIPPS), USA, announce this call for joint research projects. The aim is to promote and strengthen collaboration between researchers affiliated with SCRIPPS and researches affiliated with Higher Education and Research Institutions in the State of São Paulo in the biomedical research field.

2. Research Theme

Basic biomedical science.  

3. E ligibility criteria

3.1 In the State of São Paulo, Brazil, eligible applicants are researchers who comply with the Regular Research Award (www.fapesp.br/137) eligibility criteria.

3.2 In the USA, the call is open for any SCRIPPS Faculty members.

4. Funding and Duration

SCRIPPS will provide funding of up to US$ 25,000 in direct costs per project per year and FAPESP will provide the equivalent amount of up to US$ 25,000 per project per year under the provisions of Clause 5 of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties (www.fapesp.br/en/9532). As a general rule, the funding is for two years with a balanced contribution from each funding Party.

The maximum project duration is 24 months, non-extendable.

5. Joint Research Plan

The proposal must include a Joint Research Plan, with a maximum of eight (8) pages of scientific content (bibliographic references and figures included), prepared jointly by applicants from SCRIPPS and from the State of São Paulo. The Joint Research Plans submitted to FAPESP and to SCRIPPS must be identical, one being a copy of the other. The Joint Research Plan shall involve a clear description of the planned collaboration (distribution of work and methods of implementation) and the added value to be expected from the collaboration. The Joint Research Plan shall include summarized budgets for each funding Party.

6 . Submission conditions specific to FAPESP

6.1 Proposals submitted to FAPESP must follow the rules of the Regular Research Award, as available at www.fapesp.br/137 (in Portuguese) except if explicitly indicated in this CFP, as is the case for the composition of the proposal, described in the next item.

6.2 The proposal, submitted in English, shall contain:

a) Research Proposal Form (including the documents listed in the checklist);

b) Researcher’s Registration Form (to be filled by the PI and the Associated Researchers from the State of São Paulo);

c) Summary of the CV of the Principal Investigators and of each one of the Associated Researchers from both sides (in English, following the guidelines at www.fapesp.br/en/6351);

d) Research team description from the State of São Paulo;

e) Budget worksheets specifically designed for this Call;

f) Joint Research Plan (item 5 of the CFP).

7. Submission conditions specific to SCRIPPS

Proposals submitted to SCRIPPS shall contain:

a) Cover and signature page for the SCRIPPS applicant (request the form to fapesp@scripps.edu);

b) Short CV of the Principal Investigators and of each one of the Associated Researchers from both sides (following the guidelines at www.fapesp.br/en/6351);

c) Budget and budget justification for the SCRIPPS applicant (request the form to fapesp@scripps.edu);

d) Joint Research Plan (item 5 of the CFP);

e) Other Support for the SCRIPPS applicant (in NIH format).

8. Timeline

Call announced on FAPESP and SCRIPPS websites

9. How to apply

9.1 The proposal must be submitted according to the timeline in the previous section, both to FAPESP by the Principal Investigator from the State of São Paulo and to SCRIPPS by the Principal Investigator from SCRIPPS.

9.2 No proposal will be accepted after the closing date for submission, nor will any addendum or explanation be accepted, unless those explicitly and formally requested by FAPESP or SCRIPPS.

9.3 Submissions to FAPESP can only be accepted in paper, via mail, to the following address: Rua Pio XI, 1500, Alto da Lapa, CEP 05468-901 – São Paulo/SP, with “Chamada FAPESP/SCRIPPS 2015” written on the envelope. Will be considered the date of the postal postmark stamped on the envelope.

9.4 Submissions to SCRIPPS should be in electronic format to fapesp@scripps.edu, with “ FAPESP/SCRIPPS RFP 2015” on the subject line.

9.5 Proposals submitted by any other means will not be accepted. Late submissions will not be reviewed.

10. Analysis and selection

10.1 Each Party will select the proposals according to its own procedures. Only the proposals selected by both Parties will be funded.

10.2 The evaluation criteria include:

  • scientific quality and innovativeness of the research plan;

  • feasibility of the research plan;

  • competence and expertise of the applicants from both countries;

  • added value generated by American-Brazilian research collaboration.

The mobility of researchers will also be considered in the review.

10.3 Proposals that do not comply with the terms of this Call will not qualify for analysis.
