The study of the Magellanic Clouds and their close relationship with the Milky Way is the main subject of this project. It intents on creating a photometric database (complemented by spectroscopy) of stellar clusters to study the interaction between the Magellanic Clouds and the Milky Way and its effects on the formation and dissolution of the star clusters.

    Objectives

The main objective is to work with photometric and spectroscopic data of Magellanic Clouds star clusters, aiming at answering the following key questions: (i) the impact of the tidal forces originated from the Magellanic Clouds – Milky Way interactions; (ii) the determination of the star formation history and chemical enrichment of the Clouds.

    Project

It is well known that satellite galaxies Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) are part of a close interacting system that includes the Milky Way. The complexity of the tidal forces and the intense gravitational shearing acting on these galaxies becomes evident on the various large-scale structural perturbations seen on the system, composed mainly by gas, dust and stellar content stripped away by tidal effects. The tenuous connection between the LMC and SMC (i.e. Magellanic Bridge – MB), the gigantic trail left behind as the Clouds moves (i.e. Magellanic Stream – MS) and the elongations towards the forward orbital motion (i.e. Leading Arm – LA) are some of their most well known tidal perturbations. These structures have been mapped by the highest resolution all-sky survey of HI emission ever made, by Westmeier (2018, MNRAS 474, 289).

The investigation of the stellar populations on star clusters and on dwarf galaxies associated with the Magellanic Group is crucial to confirm the existence of a set of common parameters which can be used to relate them to the Magellanic Clouds. This in turn, will help elucidate the most likely accretion scenario of these galaxies and the origin of the stellar population of the Milky Way.

However, most of the photometric studies carried out on the Magellanic Clouds are either based on shallow photometry and conducted over very small fields, such as that of the HST, or make use of surveys covering only their inner regions, thus neglecting the periphery of these galaxies and their important tidal structures such as the MB, the LA, and the MS.

The structural and astrophysical properties of a complete sample of the Magellanic Cloud periphery clusters will provide constraints indicating the most likely scenario towards the real configuration of the gravitating system Magellanic Clouds – Milky Way.

Therefore, this project objective is the photometric study (followed up with spectroscopy) of outer Magellanic Clouds star clusters. Knowledge of photometry and spectroscopy are desired.
