José Luiz Proença Módena

José Modena received a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences at the University of São Paulo (USP) and MSc (2004) and PhD (2009) in Cellular and Molecular Biology (emphasis on Microbiology) from the School of Medicine (USP) in Ribeirão Preto. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Infectious Diseases at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, USA.

Currently, he is associate professor at the Institute of Biology (IB) of University of Campinas (Unicamp), where he has coordinated the Laboratory of Emerging Viruses (LEVE). He has developed translational research on the pathogenesis and evolution of emerging viruses in Brazil, such as SARS-CoV-2, Oropouche (OROV), Mayaro (MAYV), Chikungunya (CHIKV), Zika (ZIKV) and Dengue (DENV) viruses.

He is a board member of the Brazilian Society of Virology (2021-2024). At this date, he is a member of the following committees from Unicamp: (1) postgraduate program in Genetics and Molecular Biology (Capes 7), (2) graduation committee and (3) president of the Internal Biosafety Committee (CIBio). He worked as a coordinator of the FAPESP Research Program on the Zika virus (2016) and is a member of the Zika-Unicamp Network and Unicamp Task Force against Covid-19. He is a reviewer for several international journals and was guest academic editor of the Viruses. He is a CNPq level 1D researcher.
