SPRINT - 4th Edition 2016: Guidelines Brunel University London

Specific requests for submission of proposals in partnership with researchers from BRUNEL UNIVERSITY LONDON 

FAPESP and Brunel University London signed a Cooperation Agreement for Research in December, 2015, aiming to implement scientific and technological cooperation between researchers from the BRUNEL University London, UK and from the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, through the funding of joint research projects.

Under the referred Agreement, as a first action to promote such collaboration, FAPESP and Brunel University London make public this Call for Proposals for the exchange of faculty and postdoctoral researchers, under the terms and conditions of the SPRINT 4nd Edition 2016 (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call42016) and hereinafter set forth.

1. Eligibility from Brunel side

1.1 Eligibility to submit proposals within the scope of this Call:

Academic staff at Brunel University London with a contract of employment for the full length of the proposed project

1.2 Eligibility for the exchange activities within the scope of this Call

a. The project proposal may include exchange visits of staff (Brunel academic staff members in a teaching and research, or research only role, and postdoctoral fellows), and mobility as part of workshops, seminars and scientific activities necessary to the project development.

b. The proposals must aim to respect the principle of reciprocity with regard to academic qualifications of those who will take part in the exchange activities.

c. Eligibility of research partners in the State of São Paulo should observe the items 3.1 and 7.1 of FAPESP call (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call42016).

2. Fields of knowledge

This Call for Proposals invites research proposals in all fields of knowledge.

3. Duration of the project for the exchange of researchers

The maximum duration of each project is up to 24 months.

5. Funding principles

FAPESP will provide funding of up to the equivalent of £5,000 (or the equivalent in Brazilian Reals) per proposal per year and Brunel will provide funding of up to £5,000 per proposal per year, for the duration of the grant to cover research-related mobility expenses, under the provisions of Clause 5 of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties (www.fapesp.br/en/9994)

6. Proposal characteristics f or Brunel researchers

6.1 The proposal shall be composed of:

a. A Research Project having a maximum of five (5) pages of scientific content, written jointly by the Brazilian Principal Investigator and the Principal Investigator at Brunel. The Research Project must be written in English. One copy of the Research Project shall be sent to FAPESP and another (identical) copy to Brunel.

6.2 Additional documents required:

a. Research Proposal Form

b. Case For Support (maximum 2 pages)

c. Budget sheet

d. CV for each participant in the partnership (maximum of 2 pages)

e. Worksheet

f. Letter of Agreement of the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo to which the PI from São Paulo is affiliated. The same document is required by FAPESP in item 6.2.3 at www.fapesp.br/sprint/call42016. The Letter of Agreement may be delivered after the notification of results of this call for proposals and before the grant agreement signature.

6.3 The Research Project must include the following:

a. A substantive description of the exchange activities, and the academic staff, research staff and PhD students involved, emphasizing their relevance. The proposal must state clearly how the exchange activities to be carried out will contribute to the ongoing research project funded by FAPESP and research either within a Brunel Research Institute or a College Research Centre;

b. A timeline for each specific exchange mission, considering the limit of missions and funding established in this Call;

c. Performance indicators for the planned activities, for instance number of participants at workshops or seminars, dissemination activities, research outputs etc.;

d. A description of each candidate’s contribution to the mission, explaining their expertise to carry out the foreseen activities;

e. Foreseen actions that will add to the impact of the exchange for Brunel and for the Brazilian Institution in the State of São Paulo, e.g. by means of seminars, short courses and visits to other institutions that carry out research activities in cognate areas.

f. Steps that will be taken to sustain the collaboration beyond the initial funding from FAPESP and Brunel University.

7. Submission of proposals to Brunel

Submissions can only be accepted by email to Yulia.Matskevich@brunel.ac.uk.

8. Result of the analysis

Final results will be announced on FAPESP (www.fapesp.br) and Brunel University London (www.brunel.ac.uk) web portals and by means of a communication to the interested PIs.

9. Contract for selected projects by Brunel

9.1 Selected proposals will subject to the conditions set forth in the letter of award.

9.2 Selected proposals will be expected to submit all expenses immediately following each visit and within the agreed Project period. A progress report will be required following each visit to Sao Paulo. it will contain a brief summary of progress and a plan of action with specific timelines detailing when research funding applications will be submitted to the chosen sponsor.

10. Grant cancellation

Brunel University London may cancel grant funding of a Brunel University London researcher, if, during the term of the grant agreement, a fact is of sufficient gravity to justify cancellation, at the discretion of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Innovation), without prejudice of any other appropriate actions.
