SPRINT – 3rd Edition 2019: Guidelines The University of Queensland (UQ)

Specific requests for proposals submissions from researchers of The University of Queensland (UQ)
FAPESP and UQ signed a Cooperation Agreement for Research on 5 August 2016, aiming to implement scientific and technological cooperation between researchers from UQ, Australia, and from the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, through the funding of joint research projects.
Under the referred Agreement, as a continuation of this fruitful collaboration to promote such collaboration, FAPESP and UQ make public this Call for Proposals for the exchange of faculty and postdoctoral researchers under the terms and conditions of the SPRINT 3rd Edition 2019 (sprint/call32019) and hereinafter set forth.
1. Eligibility from UQ side
1.1. Eligibility to submit proposals within the scope of this Call:
a) The UQ Lead Investigator must hold an eligible University of Queensland salaried appointment. The appointment must be teaching and research; research-focused; or clinical academic with a term valid for the duration of the relevant funding period. The appointment must be at Academic Level A or higher. MRI-UQ researchers with approved honorary UQ appointments are eligible to apply for this scheme as a UQ Lead Investigator provided subsequent external applications are submitted through UQ Research and Innovation;
b) Other UQ Investigators named on an application may hold salaried, adjunct, academic title or affiliated appointments with the University, and may be Research Higher Degree (RHD) candidates enrolled at the University of Queensland for the duration of the exchange mission;
c) A UQ Investigator may only be named on one application per round.
1.2. Eligibility for the exchange activities within the scope of this Call
a. As described above in the item 1.1;
b. The participation of PhD students from UQ is also accepted;
c. Considering the principle of reciprocity, FAPESP exceptionally may either support PhD students from São Paulo state to take part in the scientific missions. In this case, the PhD student(s) must have an ongoing FAPESP fellowship during the planned exchange mission to the partner institution;
d . The proposals must aim to respect the principle of reciprocity with regard to academic qualifications of those who will take part in the exchange activities.
e. Eligibility of research partners in the State of São Paulo should observe the items 3.1 and 4.2 of FAPESP call (sprint/call32019).
f. Eligible expenditure under the Call includes economy flights, other travel expenses, accommodation, meals and incidentals, and initial activities of data collection.
2. Fields of knowledge
This Call for Proposals invites research proposals in any of UQ’s fields of research.
3. Duration of the project for the exchange of researchers
The duration of each project is up to 12 months, and projects must be conducted during the period February 2020 to February 2021.

5. Funding principles
5.1 . FAPESP will provide funding of up to the equivalent of AUD$10,000.00 (ten thousand dollars) per proposal per year and UQ will provide funding of up to AUD$10,000.00 (ten thousand dollars) per proposal per year, for the duration of the grant to cover research-related mobility expenses, under the provisions of Clause 5 of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties (www.fapesp.br/en/10412).
5.2 FAPESP and UQ will fund a maximum of two approved proposals.
6. Proposal characteristics for UQ researchers:
The proposal shall be composed of:
a. A Research Project having a maximum of five (5) pages of scientific content, written in English jointly by the Principal Investigator at the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo and the Principal Investigator at UQ.
b. One copy of the Research Project shall be sent to FAPESP and an identical copy to UQ.
c. Additional documents required by UQ (see 6.2)
6.1 As described at sprint/call32019, the Research Project must include the following items:
a. A substantive description of the exchange activities, emphasizing their relevance. The proposal must state clearly how the exchange activities to be carried out by each team will contribute to the ongoing research project funded by FAPESP and to the research being carried by the partner researcher at UQ;
b. Detailed schedule of the exchange missions to be carried out by the partner team at the São Paulo institution and the São Paulo team at UQ;
c. Performance indicators for the planned activities, indicating the expected results;
d. A description of each candidate’s contribution to the mission, explaining their expertise to carry out the foreseen activities;
e. Foreseen actions that will add to the impact of the exchange for UQ and for the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo, e.g. by means of seminars, short courses etc.;
f. Description of how the Principal Investigators in São Paulo and at UQ intend to prepare a joint research project, resulting from the exchange activities developed from the proposal submitted in this Call, to be submitted to research funding agencies accessible in their regions in order to create a medium-long-term collaboration (up to one page).
6.2 For UQ applicants, a completed UQ Application Form for SPRINT CALL 3 rd Edition/2019 must be submitted, available online at the UQ Research Management website – https://research.uq.edu.au/research-support/research-management/funding-schemes/uq-internal-initiatives/uq-fapesp-strategic-research-fund-sprint. As per the Application Form, additional attachments are also required, including:
6.2.1 A full and final copy of the completed application form from the São Paulo Lead PI, including the Research Project description and any associated documents as submitted to FAPESP. The Research Project description, having a maximum of five (5) pages of scientific content, should be written jointly by the Principal Investigator of the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo and the Principal Investigator at UQ. The Research Project must be written in English. One copy of the Research Project shall be sent to FAPESP and another (identical) copy to UQ. The Research Project must include the items included in the item 6.1 at sprint/call32019;
6.2.2 Letter of Agreement of the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo to which the PI from São Paulo is affiliated. The same document is required by FAPESP in item 6.2.3 at sprint/call32019. The Letter of Agreement may be delivered after the notification of results ofthis call for proposals and before the grant agreement signature.
6.2.3 A two-page CV of the Lead UQ Investigator using the UQ template.
7. Submission of proposals to UQ
Applicants must submit their proposal as a finalised plan ready for implementation. The application must contain all the information necessary for assessment of the project without the need for further written or oral explanation, or reference to additional documentation unless requested by the assessors. Applications must be submitted on the UQ Application Form for SPRINT CALL 3rd Edition/2019 with accompanying supporting documentation as specified in the Guidelines. Applications must conform to the prescribed page and formatting limits and include certification by the UQ lead investigator and by their relevant UQ Head of School or Centre/Institute Director as specified on the Application Form.
Applications are to be submited to internationalgrants@research.uq.edu.au in digital format (one complete PDF including signatures and supporting documentation) by the closing date for the round.
8. Result of the analysis
The results will be announced on the FAPESP (www.fapesp.br) web portal and by means of a communication to the interested PIs.
Following the announcement, UQR&I will issue successful recipients with a Grant Record Letter which will include details of the grant and a copy of the Letter of Intent. Applicants should note that all necessary ethical/biosafety/other clearances must be obtained before work requiring such clearances can commence.
9. Contract for selected projects by UQ
Successful proposals will be conducted in accordance with the Guidelines of the Call; consistent with the activities and budget proposed in the application, or as otherwise varied with the endorsement of UQ Research and Innovation; and in compliance with the signed Letter of Intent. Funding may be withdrawn by the University in the event of non-compliance under the scheme.
Within one month of completion of the exchange project, the UQ Lead Investigator must submit a short report on the exchange activity to UQ. A template for this report will be provided to successful applicants. The award will also need to be acquitted by your UQ School/Institute/Centre.
10. Grant cancellation
FAPESP or UQ may cancel funding if, during the grant timeframe, a significant event justifies its cancellation in the assessment of the Joint Steering Committee, without prejudice of any other appropriate actions.
