Rui Monteiro de Barros Maciel is Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology) and Director of the Laboratory of Molecular and Translational Endocrinology, Division of Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, Escola Paulista de Medicina, Universidade Federal de São Paulo (EPM/UNIFESP) and Member of the National Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Maciel graduated in Medicine at EPM/UNIFESP, where he did Medical Residency in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, M. Sc. in Immunology, Ph.D. in Endocrinology, and is Professor of Medicine since 1992.
In the United States, he was a Research-Fellow at the University of California Los Angeles and Visiting-Professor at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Maciel research activities, funded by FAPESP, CAPES and CNPq, in the areas of thyroid cancer, thyroid hormone metabolism, hormone measurements and cellular and molecular biology of thyroid diseases, generated more than 240 papers, more than 120 book chapters, and the edition of 6 books. Dr. Maciel was Mentor of in 27 M.Sc. and 34 Ph. D. students, among which several current leaders in Brazilian and international endocrinology. Among the original contributions to the research are: a) the peripheral conversion of T4 to T3 is in the cell membrane; b) the autocrine production of IGF by the thyroid; c) the discovery of genes for periodic thyrotoxic paralysis in potassium channels; d) contributions to the pathogenesis and follow-up of thyroid cancer; e) contributions to the pathogenesis of subclinical thyroid disease; f) contributions to laboratory endocrinology.
In addition to his research, Dr. Maciel has actively participated in other activities at UNIFESP, where he was Chief of Medical Residents, Member of the Medical Residency Commission, President of the Medical Residency Commission, Vice-Chief of the Department of Medicine, Head of the Division of Endocrinology, Member of the Search Commission for Teaching, Coordinator of the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research and Dean of Graduate Studies and Research. Among others, he received the Awards: a) Cancer Prize from the National Academy of Medicine; b) LATS-Prize, of the Latin American Thyroid Society, for thyroid research in Latin America; c) SBEM-SP, from the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology, for significant contributions to endocrinology research and teaching; d) Member of the National Order of Scientific Merit, for contributions to research; e) Brazilian Thyroid Award for Research and Leadership; f) CAPES Award for Best Ph. D. Thesis in the area of Medicine.
He was a member of the Health Coordination of the Research Foundation of the State of São Paulo-FAPESP, of the CAPES Graduate Program Evaluation Commission, Chief Editor of the Archives of Endocrinology and Metabolism. Current member of the Editorial Committee, European Thyroid Journal and Journal of the Endocrine Society.
He has been a Consultant in Endocrinology at Grupo Fleury since 1979; he is currently member of the Board of Directors of Grupo Fleury.
