Professor Gales received her medical degree from the Faculdade de Medicina da Fundação ABC (FMFUABC) in 1991 and enrolled in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases Fellowship Programs at Escola Paulista de Medicina in Universidade Federal de São Paulo (Unifesp) between 1992 and 1995.

She obtained her master (1997) and PhD (2001) degrees at the same institution, addressing the issue of bacterial resistance to antimicrobials. During her PhD, under the supervision of Prof. Ronald N. Jones, she worked as a Research Fellow at the Department of Pathology at the University of Iowa, Iowa, United States, on antimicrobial resistance surveillance studies.

She has been a Professor at the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, Escola Paulista de Medicina, Unifesp since 2006. She served as Chair of the Brazilian Antimicrobial Susceptibility Committee (BrCAST) between 2017 and 2018. She is editor of the journals mSphere®, The Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases (BJID), and the Journal of Global Antimicrobial Resistance (JGAR), and a member of the editorial board of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (AAC).

She has coordinated the Postgraduate Program in Infectious Diseases at Unifesp since December 2018 and served as a permanent member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership (GARDP) since 2020. Prof. Gales is a CNPq Researcher, level 1A (2009). Her main research interests are: Bacterial antimicrobial resistance and new diagnostic/therapeutic tools to tackle antimicrobial-resistant bacteria.
