Helenice Mercier

She received a bachalor’s degree in Biological Sciences (1983), master (1988) and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences - Botany (1988) from University of São Paulo (USP). She is Associate Professor in Botany at the Institute of Biosciences (IB-USP) (2004). She was a post-doc researcher at University of Paris (VI) (1998) and Universities of Dresden, Würzburg (2010) and Oxford (2016 and 2018).

Currently, Helenice is a Full Professor in the Department of Botany at USP since 2011. She was the Head of Department of Botany for two terms (2012-2014 and 2016 to 2018); Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Botany at IB-USP for two terms (2006 to 2011) and President of the Postgraduate Committee (CPG) of (IBUSP) (2010-2011). She was assistant and area editor (Plant Physiology) of the Revista Brasileira de Botânica (1999-2003) and Vice-President of the São Paulo Botany Society.

She is a member of the European Science Foundation’s “College of Expert Reviewers” since 2020. She has been a National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) Research Productivity Fellow since 1994.

She has experience in the area of developmental physiology of Brazilian epiphytic plants (mainly bromeliads), working on investigations into nitrogen nutrition and CAM photosynthesis, among other topics. More recently, she has been carrying out research on the production of rice lines transformed with the bromeliad aquaporin gene.
