Graduated in Veterinary Medicine (1985), Master in Microbiology (1991), PhD in Immunology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the United States where he did his post-doctoral training.

Currently, he is full Professor of the Department of Immunology at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at University of São Paulo (USP). He is 1A Productivity Researcher level at CNPq, where he was a member of the Immunology Committee. He was also a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, a member of The World Academy of Science (TWAS) and Commander of the National Order of Scientific Merit, since 2010. He was President of the Brazilian Society of Immunology in the 2012-2013 biennium.

He is a member of the editorial board of the following international journals: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, Frontiers in Immunology, Microbes and Infection and Pathogens. His line of research is focused on innate immunity and understanding the host-parasite relationship using bacterial and parasitic infections as models.
