FAPESP to support international collaborations in Oceans and Marine Biodiversity Versão em português
Call with Belmont Forum will support transdisciplinary projects focused on ocean biodiversity conservation, ocean-climate integration, and governance for sustainability
FAPESP announces its participation in the Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Action Ocean 2 call for proposals: "Toward the Ocean We Want: Ecosystem Biodiversity and Sustainability for Nature and Human Well-Being."
The call seeks to promote transdisciplinary, solutions-oriented research on marine biodiversity conservation, ocean-climate-biodiversity integration, and governance for sustainability.
In alignment with the UN Ocean Decade, the call requires the co-production of knowledge with users and stakeholders from the earliest stages of project design, as well as clear commitments to social impact, human resources development, and responsible management of data and digital outputs.
Researchers based in the state of São Paulo may submit proposals requesting FAPESP support under specific conditions that complement the international Belmont Forum call.
Consortia must be multilateral (a minimum of three countries/agencies), integrate natural sciences and engineering, social sciences and humanities, and societal partners, and present a consistent engagement and dissemination plan, including participation in program coordination activities (kick-off, mid-term, and final meetings).
Projects must also include clear commitments to social impact, human resources development, and responsible data management, in alignment with the UN Ocean Decade.
The submission process will take place in two stages (pre-proposal and full proposal via the BFgo system). The eligibility pre-screening for São Paulo-based teams must be submitted by email to chamada-bf-ocean2@fapesp.br at least 10 days before the international deadline.
Once eligibility is approved, the corresponding proposal must be submitted through SAGe, following the eligibility rules, fundable items, and other guidelines set out in this document.
Proposals must address at least one of the following themes, seeking cross-cutting connections between them:
- Theme 1: Biodiversity conservation and nature-based solutions;
- Theme 2: Ocean-biodiversity-climate integration;
- Theme 3: Futures of nature, ocean governance, and ethics for sustainability.
The total funding made available by FAPESP is R$ 3.3 million. The maximum budget per project is R$ 600,000, not including Technical Reserve, and selected projects may run for up to 36 months. Proposals must comply with the general conditions of the Regular Research Grant modality (fapesp.br/apr), subject to the exceptions described in the call.
The deadline for eligibility consultation with FAPESP is April 20, 2026. The deadline for submission of pre-proposals to the Belmont Forum and to FAPESP (via SAGe) is April 30.
