Guidelines for the award of Fellowships under the Technical Training Program Versão em português

Current guidelines as from December 1st, 2025.

Technical Training (TT) and Academic Training (AT) Fellowships are part of the Technical Capacity-Building Program. These Fellowships aim to train and develop technicians and students enrolled in technical courses at the secondary and higher education levels who participate in activities that support current research projects funded by FAPESP.

TT and AT Fellowships may be requested only as associated submissions as a budget item for Grants. For this reason, in addition to these guidelines, applicants must observe the rules on Fellowships Awarded as Associated Submissions, available at fapesp.br/17940.

1) Target audience (back to index)

1.1) Technical Training Fellowships

The Technical Training Fellowship is aimed at candidates with varying degrees of training and experience, depending on the level of the TT Fellowship, to carry out training activities and support the development of the Grant's research project.

1.1.1) Levels of TT Fellowships:

a) TT-1 Fellowship:

a.1. For students enrolled in graduate programs; and

a.2. Dedication of 15 hour per week to research project support activities, without compromising their academic performance.

b) TT-2 Fellowship:

b.1. For students in their final year of technical secondary school, or who have completed secondary school; and

b.2. Dedication of 16 to 40 hours per week (the amount of the Fellowship to be paid will be proportional to the number of weekly hours) dedicated to research project support activities.

c) TT-3 Fellowship:

c.1. For candidates with a higher education degree; and

c.2. Dedication of 16 to 40 hours per week (the amount of the Fellowship to be paid will be proportional to the number of weekly hours) dedicated to research project support activities.

d) TT-4 Fellowship:

d.1. For graduate candidates;

d.2. With at least two years of experience in research or professional experience after graduation, or with an MSc degree, both in a field related to the proposed Activity Plan; and

d.3. Dedication of 16 to 40 hours per week (the amount of the Fellowship to be paid will be proportional to the number of weekly hours) dedicated to research project support activities.

e) TT-4A Fellowship:

e.1. For graduate candidates;

e.2. With at least four years of experience in research or professional experience after graduation, in a field related to the proposed Activity Plan; and

e.3. Dedication of 16 to 40 hours per week (the amount of the Fellowship to be paid will be proportional to the number of weekly hours) dedicated to research project support activities.

f) TT-5 Fellowship:

f.1. For graduate candidates;

f.2. With at least five years of experience in research or professional experience after graduation, or with an MSc degree, both in a field related to the proposed Activity Plan; and

f.3. Dedication of 16 to 40 hours per week (the amount of the Fellowship to be paid will be proportional to the number of weekly hours) dedicated to research project support activities.

1.2) Academic Training Fellowships

The Academic Training Fellowship is aimed at candidates who are formal employees of the Institution where the Grant's research project is being developed, to enable them to attend courses and undertake technical internships in support of the project.

1.2.1) Levels of AT Fellowship:

a) AT-1 Fellowship:

a.1. Be a mid- or higher-level technician;

a.2. Be associated with a research institution in the state of São Paulo; and

a.3. Attend a course or internship in the candidate's own city.

b) AT-2 Fellowship:

b.1. Be a mid-level technician;

b.2. Attend a course or internship in Brazil, but outside the candidate's city; and

b.3. Be associated with a research institution in the state of São Paulo.

c) AT-3 Fellowship:

c.1. Be a higher-level technician;

c.2. Attend a course or internship outside the candidate's city; and

c.3. Be associated with a research institution in the state of São Paulo.

d) AT-4 Fellowship:

d.1. Be a higher-level technician;

d.2. Attend a course or internship out of Brazil; and

d.3. Be associated with a research institution in the state of São Paulo.

2) Fellowships Components (back to index)

2.1) Technical Training Fellowships

a) Monthly fees: in the amount defined in the FAPESP's Table of Fellowship Values, available at fapesp.br/3162 (Table of Fellowship Values in Brazil).

b) Maternity/Paternity Leave: period of leave of absence without interruption of payment in case of maternity/paternity leave (complete guidelines at fapesp.br/8484).

2.2) Academic Training Fellowships

a) Tuition fees: for all levels of AT Fellowship.

b) Monthly fees: for AT Fellowships, levels 2, 3, and 4, in the amount defined in the FAPESP's Table of Fellowship Values, available at fapesp.br/3162 (Table of Fellowship Values in Brazil).

c) Transportation expenses: for AT Fellowships, levels 2, 3, and 4, according to rules available at fapesp.br/17938, item 3.4.

d) Travel insurance: for Level 4 AT Fellowship, according to the amount available at fapesp.br/2921.

3) Duration (back to index)

3.1) Technical Training Fellowships

3.1.1) The duration of TT Fellowships may be a maximum of 24 months and will always start on the first day of each month. Fellowships with a duration period of less than 6 months will not be awarded.

3.1.1.1) Fellowships awarded on a replacement basis will have the remaining duration of the previously awarded Fellowship. Exceptionally in these cases, the Fellowship may be awarded for a period of less than 6 months.

3.1.2) Each fellowship recipient may receive a maximum of 24 months of TT Fellowship, including any periods of TT Fellowships received at any level, whether continuously or discontinuously.

3.2) Academic Training Fellowships

3.2.1) The duration of AT Fellowships may be a minimum of 30 (thirty) days and a maximum of 6 (six) months.

4.1) TT and AT Fellowships may only be requested as associated submissions of Grants, according to the procedures indicated in the guidelines for Fellowships Awarded as Associated Submission, available at fapesp.br/17940.

4.2) The possibility of requesting TT and AT Fellowships as associated submissions of the Grant must be verified in the guidelines for the support opportunity or in the notice of the Grant Call for Proposals in whose budget the quota will be included.

4.3) The implementation of Fellowship quotas may be requested at any time, subject to the available Fellowship quotas and the duration of the Grant process to which it will be linked.

4.3.1) Additional TT and AT Fellowship quotas may be requested only at the time of submission of the Scientific Report of the Grant, according to the procedures indicated in the guidelines for Fellowships Awarded as Associated Submission.

5) Requirements for applications (back to index)

a) Have no pending responsibilities with FAPESP (i.e., issuance of reviews and return process, delivery of Scientific Report and Financial Report). Proposals whose Beneficiary or Supervisor have unfulfilled responsibilities with FAPESP overdue by more than 60 (sixty) days will not be reviewed.

b) When submitting the application for a Fellowship, candidates must be aware of the rules, forms and procedures available at fapesp.br/ and fapesp.br/sage.

c) The candidate must fit the profile required for the modality and level of Fellowship requested, as per items 1.1.1 and 1.2.1 of these guidelines.

d) For the development of the activities, foreign candidates are responsible for verifying and obtaining the necessary documents for their permanence in Brazil alongside the Brazilian Consulate.

e) Inform if the grant or fellowship has been submitted to any other funding entity and whether the applicant has other current grants or fellowships for similar research.

f) FAPESP does not award Fellowships of any kind in situations where the advisor is closely related to the candidate. Close relatedness is considered a potential conflict of interest that compromises the essential perception of impartiality in evaluating the fellowship recipient's qualifications and performance.

g) The person responsible for the fellowship recipient must be the principal investigator of the Grant or one of the co-principal investigators approved by FAPESP in the project.

h) In the AT-4 Fellowship, it is the responsibility of the Grantee to verify with the appropriate consulate the need to obtain the specific visa and to obtain the visa.

6) Required conditions and obligations (back to index)

6.1) Fellowship Recipient

a) Have their own Individual Taxpayer Registration Number (CPF) to enable the release of the Grant Contract.

b) Be aware of the obligations specified in the Grant Contract.

b.1) Noncompliance with the rules and the terms specified in the Grant Contract may imply the cancellation of the Fellowship and the obligation to return funds already disbursed by FAPESP, in updated amounts.

c) The Technical Training Fellowship implies exclusive dedication to research, in accordance with the approved workload for the quota.

c.1) For Academic Training Fellowships, there is no requirement for exclusive dedication.

d) In the case of Technical Training Fellowships, fellowship recipients are not allowed to be formal employees or receive a fellowship from any other entity, salary, or remuneration for performing activities of any kind throughout the term of their Fellowship. In exceptional and justified circumstances, as defined in PR Ordinance nº. 05/2012 (fapesp.br/7090), FAPESP may give permission for activities that contribute to the development of the research project.

d.1) At the discretion of FAPESP, situations may be considered in which the candidate is a formal employee and has a leave of absence from the Affiliated institution, with or without salary, that allows for exclusive dedication to the course and research.

e) Consult FAPESP before accepting any financial support from any other funding entity, whether public or private, for the execution of the same research project being supported by FAPESP.

f) Do not modify the project (activity plan, dates, etc.) without the prior consent of FAPESP.

g) Immediately inform FAPESP, through the Advisor, of any contract, appointment to fill a position or to perform a function (whether remunerated or not), change of residence, as well as any interruption of research activities.

h) Be aware of and respect the guidelines contained in FAPESP's Code of Good Scientific Practices, available at fapesp.br/boaspraticas.

i) Always use the updated versions of the guidelines, forms and procedures, available at fapesp.br and fapesp.br/sage.

6.2) Principal Investigator

a) The conditions and obligations required of the Principal Investigator in the guidelines for the Grant modality under which the Fellowship quota was awarded must be observed.

7) Required documents (back to index)

7.1) Technical Training Fellowships

a) Activity plan for the Fellowship. A copy of the Activity Plan approved by FAPESP must be submitted for the award of the respective Fellowship quota in the Grant budget.

b) School transcripts for technical courses (if level 2) or graduate courses (other levels). The transcript must be complete, issued as an official document (with stamp and signature or authenticity code) and must contain: the full names of the subjects; any failures or withdrawals of the candidate; the passing criteria (minimum grade) or, alternatively, a statement from the Institution stating the criteria.

c) Manifestation of the Head of the Host Institution, according to the template available for download on SAGe.

d) Graduation certificate of the beneficiary – for TT-3, TT-4, TT-4A, and TT-5 levels.

e) Proof of Masters or Doctorate degree, or research/professional experience after graduation – for TT-4, TT-4A, or TT-5 levels.

f) A formal statement, signed by the advisor, indicating the expected date for graduation completion – for TT‑1 level.

g) Proof of enrollment as a regular graduate student – for TT-1 level.

h) Proof of leave of absence or resignation for candidates who are formal employees (may be submitted later, up to the date of acceptance of the award, if the Fellowship is awarded).

h.1) At the discretion of FAPESP, situations may be considered in which the candidate is a formal employee and has a leave of absence from the Affiliated institution, with or without salary, that allows for exclusive dedication to research, as specified in item 6.1.

h.2) If the fellowship recipient is not a formal employee, a signed statement providing this information must be submitted.

7.2) Academic Training Fellowships

a) Complete graduate transcript, issued as an official document (with stamp and signature or authenticity code). The transcript must contain: the full names of the subjects; any failures or withdrawals of the candidate; the passing criteria (minimum grade) or, alternatively, a statement from the University stating the criteria.

b) Manifestation of the Head of the Host Institution, according to the template available for download on SAGe.

c) Document from the Institution containing information about tuition fees.

d) Letter from the Institution where the course will be attended, accepting the candidate.

e) Copy of the course registration form.

8) Activity Report (back to index)

8.1) For Technical Training Fellowships, annual Activity Reports must be submitted on the dates defined in the Grant Contract.

8.2) For Academic Training Fellowships, an Activity Report must be submitted after completion of the course, on the date defined in the Grant Contract.

8.3) Information about preparing and submitting Activity Reports is available at fapesp.br/17940.

9) Financial Report (back to index)

9.1) There is no Financial Report for Technical Training Fellowships.

9.2) In the case of Academic Training Fellowships, a Financial Report must be submitted on the date stipulated in the Grant Contract.

9.2.1) Proof of transportation expenses, travel insurance, and tuition fees must be submitted according to the guidelines available at fapesp.br/normaspc.
