FAPESP launches call for young international researchers Versão em português
New initiative will support up to 20 outstanding researchers seeking to establish or consolidate their research careers at institutions in the state of São Paulo.
The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) has launched a new new Call for Proposals for its Young Investigator Grant for International Researchers, aimed at attracting outstanding researchers from abroad to develop independent and internationally competitive research programs at higher education and research institutions in the state of São Paulo.
The initiative will select up to 20 researchers with internationally recognized expertise in their respective fields. Applicants of any nationality may apply, provided they have been living and working abroad for at least two years after obtaining their PhD, are residing abroad when submitting their proposals, and intend to establish or consolidate their research careers at research institutions in São Paulo.
The Call is open to seven strategic research areas: Biotechnology; Energy transition; Biodiversity, sustainable production and food security; Digital transition and artificial intelligence; Quantum science and technology; Human and animal health; and Public security.
Proposals in artificial intelligence will be affiliated with the recently created São Paulo Artificial Intelligence Research Center, supported by FAPESP, MCTI/CGI.br and São Paulo state universities.
Dedicated research program
Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements of the FAPESP Young Investigator Grant and the specific conditions of the new call for proposals.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate outstanding expertise and leadership through the quality, originality and impact of their scientific careers and achievements.
Applicants should establish a research laboratory and develop a dedicated research program at an institution in the state of São Paulo, ensuring full integration with and commitment to the proposed project and position.
Projects must have a proposed duration of 60 months and may, following evaluation by FAPESP, be extended for up to 12 months. The maximum funding available per proposal is BRL 2.5 million.
A Young Investigator Fellowship may be requested in addition to this amount and can be awarded for up to the full duration of the Grant, or until the Principal Investigator obtains a permanent position at a university or research institution in the state of São Paulo.
The selection process will consist of three stages: proposal submission; evaluation by an external panel of reviewers; and an online presentation and interview with members of the Evaluation Committee. Assessment will consider the originality and potential impact of the research, the scientific quality and feasibility of the project, and the applicant's scientific background, achievements and capacity to lead an independent and internationally competitive research program.
The deadline for submission of full proposals is November 19, 2026.
The full Call for Proposals is published at fapesp.br/18389.
