Born in São Paulo, he is a chemical engineer, master and doctor in engineering from the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo. He was president of Oxiteno (1992–2006) and president of Ultrapar Participações (2007–2012).
He is president of the Superior Council of Innovation and Competitiveness of FIESP. Coordinates CNI's "Business Mobilization for Innovation". Member of the Board of Directors of EMBRAPII, of the Board of IEDI, of the Board of Directors of FNDCT, of the Advisory Board of USP, of the Superior Council of the USP Innovation Agency and of the Advisory Board of the National Association for Research and Development of Innovative Companies (ANPEI) .
He is a member of the Board of Directors of a number of private sector companies.
