Post doctoral fellowship in Ecology

• Resumo Summary

  Esta bolsa de pós-doutorado está aberta para candidatos brasileiros e estrangeiros interessados em desenvolver projeto de pesquisa na área interdisciplinar de Ecologia Aplicada, com ênfase no Direito Ambiental e na Ecologia Política. 
  
  O objetivo da pesquisa é propor estratégias para adaptar o sistema brasileiro de gerenciamento dos recursos hídricos à realidade amazônica. 
  
  Em sua pesquisa, o pós-doutorando deverá compreender como a comunidade humana do Alto Xingu percebe as leis ambientais brasileiras, em especial o novo Código Florestal no que diz respeito aos recursos hídricos; comparar temporalmente as diferentes legislações ambientais brasileiras com os dados de desmatamento derivados de sensoriamento remoto, objetivando acessar a eficácia dos instrumentos legais; investigar o grau em que grandes e pequenos produtores agrícolas são capazes de cumprir o novo Código; e verificar se a legislação pode ser uma ferramenta eficaz para a proteção de populações locais, recursos hídricos e matas ciliares. 
  
  A principal hipótese é a de que a legislação ambiental vigente tem eficácia limitada na região do Alto Xingu, em decorrência tanto das políticas públicas, quanto das práticas econômicas. Dentre as últimas, destaca-se a produção de soja para exportação, que afeta a alocação dos recursos hídricos para os diferentes usuários na região. 
  
  O candidato selecionado irá trabalhar no Centro de Energia Nuclear na Agricultura (CENA) da Universidade de São Paulo, na cidade de Piracicaba/SP, Brasil. 
  
  Espera-se que o pós-doutorando passe o tempo necessário para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa na região do Alto Xingu, principalmente nos municípios de Canarana, Querência e Água Boa. Deverá colaborar com o trabalho de campo da equipe envolvida no projeto temático. 
  
  O candidato precisa ter domínio e fluência das línguas portuguesa e inglesa, ter trabalhado previamente com pesquisa interdisciplinar envolvendo Direito Ambiental e Ecologia Política no Brasil e estar disposto a residir em Piracicaba.

  This postdoc fellowship is open to Brazilians and foreign scholars, to develop interdisciplinary research in Applied Ecology, with emphasis on Environmental Law and Political Ecology.
   
  The project will focus on proposing strategies to adapt the Brazilian Water Management System to the conditions of the Amazon.
  
  This activity aims to improve the understanding of how the human community of the Upper Xingu perceives Brazilian environmental laws, in particular the new Forest Code in relation to water resources; compare the legal frameworks with deforestation data derived from remote sensing mesuremants to access the efficacies of the frameworks of the law; investigate the degree to which large and small-scale agricultural producers are able to comply with the new code; verify if this code can be a tool for the protection of local population, water resources and riparian forests. 
  
  The main hypothesis is that the current environmental regulations have limited effectiveness in the Upper Xingu region, as a result of both public policies and economic practices. For exemple, the soybean production for export, which affects the allocation of water resources for different users in the region. 
  
  The selected candidate will work at the Center for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture (CENA) at the University of São Paulo in Piracicaba, SP, Brazil. It is expected that the postdoc spends the required time in the Upper Xingu area, mainly at Canarana, Querência and Água Boa municipalities. Work with other team members and help facilitate the field work of the entire team.
   
  It is required that the postdoc is fluent in Portuguese and English; has previously worked with interdisciplinary research involving Environmental Law and Political Ecology in Brazil; and be willing to reside in Piracicaba.

  The selected candidate will receive a FAPESP's Post-Doctoral fellowship in the amount of R$ 6,143.40 (around 2,600 USD) monthly and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in items directly related to the research activity.
