Opportunity for a post-doctoral fellowship to work on the project “Structure and Function of Bacterial Secretion Systems”. Type IV Secretion Systems (T4SSs) are supramolecular complexes (> 3 MDa) that select and translocate proteins or protein-DNA complexes across the cellular envelope of Gram-negative bacteria. The T4SS of Xanthomonas citri, a phytopathogen that infects and causes disease in citrus plants, is specialized in the secretion of toxins that kill other Gram-negative bacteria. Cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) studies carried out in our group allowed the reconstruction of the three-dimensional structure of a X. citri T4SS sub-complex associated with the external membrane.

The selected candidate will use Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Cryo-EM, or molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the structure of this complex and the mechanism of substrate translocation. Suitable candidates should have a background in biology, chemistry, physics or related areas, and a PhD in structural biology or biophysics. Preference will be given to candidates that have previous experience on Cryo-EM, NMR, or molecular simulations, as well as fluency in Linux, Matlab or python programming.

Documents: Interested candidates should write to Shaker C. Farah (chsfarah@iq.usp.br) or Roberto K. Salinas (roberto@iq.usp.br) and send a letter of intention, a brief CV, and a recommendation letter.

This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationalities. The selected candidate will receive a Post-Doctoral fellowship from the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) in the amount of R$ 7,373.10 monthly and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 10% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in items directly related to the research activity.
