He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in 1983, a PhD in Physics (Integrated Photonics) from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (1992), England, and obtained his habilitation (1999) and became a Full Professor (2005) at the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering (FEEC) at State University of Campinas (Unicamp).
He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Optical Communications at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, University College London, England (1992-1995).
He was an Associate Editor of the IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology (2003-2009) and is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Photonics Journal (2011-2017). He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA, 2011). He received the IEEE Millennium Medal in 2000.
