The parties in this Declaration of Intent, to the extent of their individual abilities:

 

Desire

• to enhance high quality trans-Atlantic co-operation in the Social Sciences and the Humanities

• to share and transfer knowledge and good practices

• to promote multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary Social Science and Humanities research on topics of medium and long-term interest

• to learn from, enhance and expand existing research networks

• to strengthen research capabilities and to encourage scientific and research excellence through interactions of scholars

• to enhance and facilitate research networks and programmes related to Social Sciences and Humanities

 

Acknowledge

• the need to exchange leading talent and innovative partnership projects

• the importance of international collaboration in exploiting the potential of research for significantly enhancing our knowledge and understanding of human thought and behaviour in the past and present

 

Recognise

• the wish of the parties to intensify co-operation in science, technology and research

• the similarities in mission, goals and activities of all parties

• the need to broaden Social Sciences and Humanities co-operation to include themes of mutual interest to the Social Sciences and Humanities in all countries

 

Agree

• to maintain the Trans-Atlantic platform in a self-fund model2, offering opportunities for strengthening trans-Atlantic ties in Social Sciences and Humanities, enabling a solid growth model for trans-Atlantic engagement, in a multi-layer and multi-facetted way 

• to respect the governance structure and management procedures to obtain the objectives of the Platform

 

Express the intention

• to continue and where appropriate start or intensify co-operation, in order to:

• create opportunities for individual researchers, to enhance scientific and research excellence

• develop science and research for society in thematic areas of mutual interest

• use this co-operation as a stepping stone for multilateral research and networks, to consolidate strengths of in the Social Sciences and the Humanities in their widest remit both with respect to research areas and geographical areas

• with the instruments:

• exchange of information between parties

• workshops, seminars and conferences

• joint research proposals and projects

• joint data and research infrastructure management

• visits of staff and scholars

 

This Joint Declaration of Intent, which is a continuation of the previous agreement ending on October 12, 2018, shall be effective as of the date of the last signature and shall remain in force for five years.  Its completion will not imply in any loss for the projects funded under the Trans-Atlantic Platform calls still being implemented. Considering that there was no interruption in the activities of the Platform, the activities developed in the period 12-10-2018 through 22-11-2018 are hereby validated. 

This Joint Declaration of Intent has been enacted in both English and Portuguese, all equal in content and form and of equal validity. In case of a discrepancy between the two language versions, the English version will prevail. There is one signed copy for each partner.

This Joint Declaration of Intent may be amended or modified by mutual written agreement of the signatories or their replacements. A Partner Organization may withdraw from the Joint Declaration of Intent through written correspondence to all signatories.  

Additional Partner Organizations may become a party to this Joint Declaration of Intent in order to participate in a joint activity. All Partner Organizations need to approve that a new party is added to the Joint Declaration of Intent.

We, the undersigned, do hereby agree to the terms and conditions specified in this Joint Declaration of Intent in conjunction with the relevant Consortium Plan developed for each joint activity.

1 The German Aerospace Centre with its headquarters in Cologne, Linder Höhe, here the DLR Project Management Agency (DLR Projektträger, DLR-PT), which is a division of DLR and implementing the social sciences and humanities activities on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Education and  Research (BMBF). DLR-PT is no funding body but is acting in this context in accordance with the social sciences and humanities priorities of the BMBF. DLR-PT does not provide funding but manages funding in the context of the Trans-Atlantic Platform in accordance with the priorities of the BMBF. Joint projects under the T-AP can only be funded if BMBF approved this funding beforehand and provides the financial resources. Thus, the participation of DLR-PT in this Joint Declaration of Intent must be understood in this context and constitutes by no means the declaration to provide funding by own financial means or discretion.

2 Partners may agree to create a subsequent document outlining which activities need to be funded by individual partners (e.g. travel) and which expenses should be shared (e.g. costs of T-AP Administration and events).
