Area Panel - Chemistry

Prof. Correia was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and began his academic training at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy and Industrial Pharmacy in 1976. After graduation, he stayed at the UFRJ to pursue his Master’s degree in Chemistry of Natural Products at the former Natural Products Research Nucleus, now known as Natural Products Research Institute. In 1981, moved to Stanford University, USA, as a graduate student, and in 1986 obtained a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry under the guidance of Professor Paul A. Wender working on intramolecular photoinduced cycloadditions.

After his Ph.D., he returned to Brazil to accept a position in his Alma Mater, UFRJ, to pursue an independent academic career, first as a Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq) Young Researcher Fellowship holder (known at the time as “Recém-Doutor”; 1987-1988), then as a Visiting Professor, and Adjunct Professor in 1990, after a public exam.

In 1993, he moved to the state of São Paulo with his research group to join the Chemistry Institute of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) as an Associate Professor, and subsequently as a Full Professor (Professor Titular) after a public exam in 2009.

Prof. Correia has acted as vice-director of the Chemistry Institute (2009-2010), head of Graduate Studies Committee of the same Institute in 2008, and coordinator of the newly created School of Pharmacy of UNICAMP for two periods (2005-2006; 2010-2012), vice-head of the Organic Chemistry Department (2008-2009; 2013-2015). He is the recipient of the 3M "Non-Tenured Faculty Award" in 2000, the “UNICAMP Zeferino Vaz Excellence Award” in 2013, the “CAPES Honorary Mention for Best Ph.D. Thesis in Chemistry” in 2011, and the “CAPES Prize for Best Ph.D. Thesis in Chemistry and Earth Sciences” in 2015.

He is a member of the Editorial Boards of Chemical Data Collections (RSC) since 2017, ChemSusChem (Elsevier) since 2020, Organocatalysis (Betham Science) since 2015, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry since 2017. Has also acted as a former Editor for “Letters in Organic Chemistry” (Betham Science) in Latin America from 2015 to 2018, and member of the Brazilian National Research Council Committee for Chemistry (2015-2017). He has also acted as General Secretary for the “10th Brazilian Meeting on Organic Synthesis” held in August 2003 in São Pedro, São Paulo, and in the organizing committees of this international event in several other occasions.

He has published over 140 papers, 1 book about the synthesis of alkaloids, and is named inventor in 8 patents, including 2 international ones. Prof. Correia holds a CNPq 1A Research Scholarship. He has supervised more than 65 dissertations and PhD thesis, 40 undergraduate students (Scientific Initiation), and 32 postdocs.

Prof. Correia’s main research interests are in homogeneous metal-catalyzed reactions, enantioselective catalysis, ligand design, the development of new synthetic methodologies for organic synthesis, and the synthesis of biologically active compounds.
