Research on degraded ecosystem restoration will be supported Versão em português
FAPESP announces a call for proposals to fund research projects on conservation and restoration of degraded ecosystems and their biodiversity.
The call is issued in partnership with the European Union through the Water JPI and BiodivERsA initiatives and the Brazilian National Council of State Funding Agencies (CONFAP).
Among the institutions from 27 countries participating in this call for proposals, are ANR (France), DFG (Germany), FCT (Portugal), FWO (Belgium) and SEIDI / AEI (Spain), with which FAPESP has an active partnership. Many other public state funding agencies are participating through the CONFAP.
The call places specific focus on aquatic ecosystems, although all environments are considered – marine, fresh water and terrestrial, including urban. Projects must combine approaches and skills from natural sciences, social sciences and humanities in an integrated manner, in order to reach the studies’ respective goals. Proposals will also be evaluated by their potential social impact and formulation of public policies.
Interested parties must elaborate proposals that broaden the knowledge on at least one of the call’s three main themes: Studying the biological and biophysical processes at stake for conservation/restoration, and their interactions; Assessing trade-offs and synergies between targets, benefits and policies for conservation and restoration; and Knowledge for improving the effectiveness and upscaling of conservation and restoration actions.
Each proposal related to FAPESP must have one principal investigator from the State of São Paulo and at least two foreign principal investigators, each from a different country among the participant countries of this call. Above these minimum criteria for the composition of consortia, the participation of principal investigators from other Brazilian States is encouraged.
In the state of São Paulo, FAPESP will fund researchers affiliated to higher education or research institutions according to its Regular Research Grant rules and instructions. Some modifications and exceptionalities apply to this call. The projects’ duration may vary from 24 to 36 months, with a maximum budget of R$ 100.000 per year.
Proponents from the state of São Paulo must consult FAPESP regarding their eligibility until November 18, 2020. Pre-proposals should be submitted exclusively by the coordinator researcher of the consortium via the call’s dedicated platform by December 7, 2020 – in compliance with the Submission Guidelines (https://proposals.etag.ee/biodivrestore) of the international Call.
The submission of complete proposals is expected to start in January 2021 with due date in March 14th. São Paulo researchers must send their proposals via the FAPESP submission platform (SAGe) in tandem with the submission via the international call’s platform by the coordinator researcher of the consortium. Only consortia considered eligible after the previous phase are qualified to the Full Proposals phase.
