Reinaldo Salomão is a doctor, graduated in medicine in Escola Paulista de Medicina (EPM), Universidade Federal de São Paulo (Unifesp), in 1982, where he did his medical-residency training in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. He obtained a master's degree (1988) and a PhD (1992) from the same institution, addressing the topic of sepsis. The title of Associate Professor was obtained in 1999.
He was a visiting researcher (DAAD-CAPES fellow) at the Max-Planck Institute for Immunobiology, Freiburg, Germany, from 1988 to 1990, in the laboratory of Dr. Chris Galanos, working on the immunobiological properties of endotoxins.
He is the head of the Sepsis Research Laboratory (LPS) at EPM/Unifesp, where research is carried out on pathophysiological mechanisms, with a focus on understanding the host response, its adaptation or dysregulation mechanisms in face of a hostile environment.
He has been a full professor at the Department of Medicine/Discipline of Infectious Diseases, EPM/Unifesp since 2006. He has served as head of the Discipline of Infectious Diseases and coordinator of its graduate program. He was head of the Department of Medicine at EPM/Unifesp (2011-12) and Dean of Graduate Studies and Research at Unifesp (2012-13).
Founding partner and President of the Latin American Sepsis Institute (LASI) from 2013-2016. He is the Coordinator of the Teaching, Research and Extension Committee (CoEPE) of Hospital São Paulo, Unifesp, university hospital, (2010-2016 and 2020-current).
He is a member of the editorial board of the SHOCK journal (SHOCK: Injury, Inflammation, and Sepsis: Laboratory and Clinical Approaches) and of the Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases (BJID) and section editor of the Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research (BJMBR).
