THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, Houston (Estados Unidos) Versão em português

The Fundação de Amparo á Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo - FAPESP and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, through their legal representatives, and recognizing that cooperation between their institutions will promote the development of research and other cultural and academic activities, hereby enter into this Agreement of Cooperation under the following clauses and conditions:

Whereas:

In 2001, with the establishment of its International Center for the Arts of the Americas (ICAA), the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) initiated an extensive cultural bridge program regarding artistic production in Latin America.

With the passage of time and the rapid growth of the Latin population in the United States, this topic has become a priority. In recognition of that fact, and focusing on it the attention it deserves, the ICAA has established as its primary goal the sound development of a multifaceted project titled: "Recovering the Critical Sources of Latin American/Latino Art".

The ICAA's recovery project will involve, without a doubt, both the concept of cultural restitution and the concept of historic compensation. Through this initiative, the ICAA seeks to set a deliberate precedent as the first project of its kind to be developed by an institution specifically linked to the visual arts, either in the United States or in Latin America. Among the basic elements of the project, three are worthy of note: the recovery of a considerable number of documents and texts regarding the production, interpretation and display of our visual arts; the translation and publication of these materials, so that they may be consulted by those interested in the art of Latin America and the Latin community of the United States; and, finally, the dissemination of these materials to children and adults in large audiences at museums, stressing the importance of relating those materials to updated educational and art history curricula, as well as socio-historical studies, at both the high school and the college level. Therefore, with the development of the ICAA, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston has the general goal of organizing the essential components that can provoke, in the medium term, a radical transformation in the United States, both in theory and in practice, in the appreciation and understanding of visual arts from our continent.

With these precedents, and further to the ICAA/MFAH recovery project mentioned above, the Fundação de Amparo á Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) will be the central institution for those project activities related to Brazil.
