Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of São Paulo (USP). He obtained his Ph.D. degree at the USP in 1998. At present, he coordinates the Hematology Division of Rede D’Or and IDOR. He did his postdoctoral work at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York from 1998 to 2001.
He is a CNPq productivity fellow, level 1A. He is a founding member of the International Acute Leukemia Consortium (ICAL), which he coordinated from 2006 to 2020. He served as President of the International Membership Committee of the American Society of Hematology from 2018 to 2022 and is currently Vice-President of the Brazilian Association of Hematology and Hemotherapy.
He is the Chief Editor of Blood Latam and Hematology, Transfusion and Cell Therapy (HTCT), and Associate Editor of Annals of Hematology. His scientific interests are the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of acute leukemias.
More than 200 articles indexed by PubMed have been published and among the most relevant articles are: 1. “Retinoic acid (RA) and As2O3 treatment in transgenic models of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) unravel the distinct nature of the leukemogenic process induced by the PML-RARa and PLZF-RARα oncoproteins” (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2000, 97, pp. 10173–10178); 2. “Improving acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) outcome in developing countries through networking, results of the International Consortium on APL”(Blood, 2013, 121, pp. 1935–1943) e 3. “Management of acute promyelocytic leukemia: Updated recommendations from an expert panel of the European LeukemiaNet”(Blood, 2019, 133(15), pp. 1630–1643).
Since 2024 he has been Manager of the Health Sciences Area at FAPESP.
