Paulo Saldiva was graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (USP) in 1977, PhD in 1983, Associate Professor in 1986 and Full Professor of the Pathology Department of the Faculty of Medicine of the USP in 1996. Deputy director of the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of São Paulo (IEA-USP) from February 2015 to April 2016, member of the City Council of São Paulo in the management of Fernando Haddad, president of the Research Committee of the School of Medicine of USP from 2012 to 2014.

Former member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of Harvard University School of Public Health, Member of the Health Organization (WHO) Air Quality Committee in 2005 and in 2021. Member of the IARC panel that evaluated the carcinogenicity of ambient air pollution in 2013. Member of the WHO panel for the development of verbal autopsy instrument to improve global vital statistics. In the past 6 years coordinator of an autopsy platform to be used in public health studies, including COVID-19.

Member of the Scientific Committee of the International Society of Urban Health. Member of the Brazilian National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Medicine. Recipient of the Anchieta Medal (São Paulo Municipality), Order of Scientific Merit (National Academy of Sciences) and the Medal Armando de Salles Oliveira (University of São Paulo). Main interesst: air pollution, climate and health, pathogenesis of human diseases and urban health.
