Maria Arminda do Nascimento Arruda

Graduated in Social Sciences from USP. Master, PhD and lecturer in Sociology from USP. She has been a full professor of Sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences (FFLCH) at USP since 2005. She is a 1A researcher at CNPq and a member of the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo (Aciesp) since 2020.

She was a senior researcher at the São Paulo Institute of Social and Political Studies (from 1987 to 2005). Her area of investigation comprises research in the areas of sociology of culture; social history of intellectuals, literature and arts; sociology of mass communication; and sociological theory. Teaches courses on Classical and Contemporary Sociological Theory, Sociology of Culture and Brazilian Social Thought at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

She was director of FFLCH (from 2016 to 2020) and Pro-Rector of Culture and University Extension at USP (from 2010 to 2015). He was a representative of the FFLCH Congregation on the University Council (2005 to 2008); coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Sociology (1991 to 1996) at FFLCH; head of the Sociology Department (2005 to 2008); representative of the Sociology Area at Capes (1997 to 2001); representative of the Human Sciences Area on the Capes Technical-Scientific Council (1998 to 2001); executive secretary of the National Association of Postgraduate Studies and Research in Social Sciences (2000 to 2004); President of the Association of Friends of the São Paulo Museum of Contemporary Art (2019); and member of the USP Academic Affairs Committee (2017-2020). From 2019 to 2022, she was coordinator of the USP Women Office.

She is a member of editorial boards of journals and advisor to national and international research agencies. Among her works, the following stand out: Metropolis and Culture São Paulo in the middle of the 20th century; Mining Mythology; The Minas Gerais Imaginary in the Political and Cultural Life of Brazil; The System Packaging; and Advertising in Brazilian Capitalism.

He has a vast production of articles and book chapters. He received numerous academic distinctions, including: Jabuti Award 2002 – Honorable Mention – Essays Category with the book Metrópole e Cultura: São Paulo no mid-20th century; ANPOCS Award for Academic Excellence Antônio Flávio Pierucci in Sociology (2014); Friend of the Book Award from the Center for Book and Publishing Studies (2018); Honor from the Postgraduate Program in Sociology at the Federal University of Paraná (2015); and Imperatriz Leopoldina Cultural Medal from the Historical and Geographic Institute of São Paulo (2012).
