FAPESP supports academic research in all areas of knowledge. The Foundation issues limited-term grants to fund specific research proposals that have been submitted to a rigorous peer review system. Research proposals can be on themes defined by the Principal Investigator’s research interests or submitted in attendance to specific calls for proposals. Most awards go to individuals or small groups of investigators. Other awards provide funding for modernization and improvement of research infrastructure, equipment and facilities within higher education and research institutions.
Research awards are available in the following schemes:
- Regular Research Awards
- Thematic Projects Research Awards – within this category, FAPESP funds the National Institutes of Science & Technology programs, in partnership with the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).
FAPESP funded research has produced outcomes of great scientific relevance, frequently of immediate economic and social impact.
