Carlos Alfredo Joly is a member of the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel/MEP of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services/IPBES, fellow of the Brazilian Academy of Science and Professor of Plant Ecology at the Plant Biology Department, State University of Campinas/UNICAMP.
As main mentor of the BIOTA/FAPESP Program (www.biota.org.br), he was in charge of planning, setting and implementing it from 1996 to 2004, being reappointed as chairman in 2009. Within the BIOTA/FAPESP he is also the Editor in Chief of the electronic peer reviewed scientific journal BIOTA NEOTROPICA (www.biotaneotropica.org.br).
His research focusses on Plant Ecophysiology and Biodiversity Conservation, and he has published more than 100 papers and/or book chapters (~6500 citations, h-index 43), supervised 28 MSc and 22 PhDs.
He edited 12 books, with prominence for the Guidelines for biodiversity conservation and restoration in Sao Paulo State (2008) and the SCOPE volume Bioenergy & Sustainability: Bridging the gaps (2015)
