FAPESP/WEIZMANN INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE

CALL FOR PROPOSALS 2015

1. Introduction

The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), Brazil and Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, launch a call for joint research projects. The aim is to promote and strengthen collaboration between researchers affiliated with Weizmann Institute of Science and researches affiliated with Higher Education and Research Institutions in State of São Paulo in the field.

2. Research Themes

Life Sciences with a preference to Cancer and/or Inflammation Research.

3. Funding

The Weizmann Institute of Science and FAPESP are prepared to fund the projects with a total of up to US$70.000 per project/per year. As a general rule, the funding is for two years with a balanced contribution from FAPESP and WIS.

4. Analysis and Selection

4.1 FAPESP and WIS will select the proposals according to its own procedures. Only the proposals selected by FAPESP and WIS will be funded.

4.2 The evaluation criteria include:

  • scientific quality and innovativeness of the research plan
  • feasibility of the research plan
  • competence and expertise of the applicants from both countries
  • added value generated by research collaboration between researchers from Israel and State of São Paulo.

The mobility of researchers will also be considered in the review.

4.3 Proposals that do not comply with the terms of this Call will not qualify for review.

5. Joint research plan

The application shall include a joint research project written by applicants from Weizmann Institute of Science and from the State of São Paulo. The research project shall involve a clear description of the planned collaboration (distribution of work and methods of implementation) and the added value to be expected from the collaboration. The research project shall include both a joint budget and separate budgets for both partners. More details in item 8 below.

6. Eligibility criteria

6.1. For the applicant researcher in the State of São Paulo, the collaborative proposal must be submitted to FAPESP as a Regular Research Award. The maximum project duration is 24 months, non-extendable.

6.2 . Applicants from Weizmann Institute of Science and from the State of São Paulo must satisfy the eligibility criteria of Weizmann Institute of Science and FAPESP, respectively.

a) For FAPESP, the criteria are available at www.fapesp.br/137#4772 for the Regular Research Award.

b) For the Weizmann Institute of Science: senior Scientist or above.

c) Each researcher can present only one proposal to this Call.

8. Submission conditions specific to FAPESP

8.1 Submission to FAPESP will follow the usual rules for Regular Project.

8.2 The proposal, submitted in English, shall contain:

a) Research Proposal form (including the regular list of documents listed there) and Researcher’s Registration Form;

b) Summary of the Principal Investigators’ CV and CVs of Collaborating Researchers from both sides (in English, following the guidelines at www.fapesp.br/en/6351);

c) Research team description;

d) Budget worksheets specifically designed for this Call;

e) A Joint Research Project with a maximum of fifteen (15) pages of scientific content;

f) Work plan for each TT (Technical Training) scholarship submitted, if applicable;

g) Detailed information and budget for each research travel (budget must be indicated in the corresponding fields of the Budget Worksheets).

8.3 All proposals shall be sent to FAPESP in hard copy, to the following address: Rua Pio XI, 1500, Alto da Lapa, CEP 05468-901 – São Paulo/SP, with Chamada FAPESP/ Weizmann Institute of Science 2015 written on the envelope.

9. Submission conditions specific to WIS

a) A Joint Research Plan with a maximum of fifteen (15) pages of scientific content (the same submitted to FAPESP).

b) Abstract - up to 250 words.

c) References - one page.

d) Preliminary results - not more than 3 figures.

e) Budget: Including manpower, disposables, specific requirements and travels (up to 2 travels per group).

f) Curriculum Vitae: Up to 2 pages with the 5 most relevant publications over the past 7 years.

In the Weizmann Institutes all proposal should be submitted as a PDF file to Jonathan Prezman (jonathan.prezman@weizmann.ac.il).

10. How to apply

10.1 The proposal as specified in the previous section must be submitted before May 29th, 2015, both to FAPESP by the Principal Investigator from the State of São Paulo and to Weizmann Institute of Science by the Principal Investigator there.

10.2 No proposal will be accepted after the closing date for submission, nor will any addendum or explanation be accepted, unless those explicitly and formally requested by FAPESP or Weizmann Institute of Science.

10.3 Submissions to FAPESP can only be accepted in paper, via mail, to the following address: Rua Pio XI, 1500, Alto da Lapa, CEP 05468-901 – São Paulo/SP, with “Chamada FAPESP/ Weizmann Institute of Science 2015” written on the envelope. Will be considered the date of the postal postmark stamped on the envelope.

10.4 Principal Investigators at Weizmann Institute of Science must submit all proposals, via e-mail.

10.5 Proposals submitted by any other means will not be accepted. Late submissions will not be reviewed.
