Under the influence of aerosols
Published on December 16, 2009By Alex Sander Alcântara Agência FAPESP – How is it that an increase in the emission of atmospheric particles (aerosols) can affect the annual rainfall pattern in the southeastern region of Brazil, particularly in the state of São Paulo? How important is the role of aerosols in provoking rain events? These were among the questions that led a group of researchers at the Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP, Paulista State University), in Araraquara, to study [...] -

The MoU will enable Brazilian and UK researchers to apply for funding through a single application and peer review process, removing some of the barriers facing international research collaboration. Researchers joined ministers and officials from both countries in celebrating [...] -
Atomic concertina
Published on November 06, 2009Pesquisa FAPESP - Interested in discovering how nature functions at its most intimate level – the scale of atoms, the block that form matter – Argentine physicist Daniel Ugarte had to do more than plan his experiments. He had to learn how to assemble and adjust the super powerful microscopes he uses and even design the buildings of the National Synchrotron Light Laboratory/LNLS that house these devices, which are sensitive to the subtle vibrations on the ground caused by passing [...] -
Ancient waters and their stories
Published on October 28, 2009Remains of rainwater in caves help describe the climate for the last thousands of years Pesquisa FAPESP - Heavy rains of the kind that flooded dozens of cities in the State of Santa Catarina early this year could be connected with weather phenomena occurring in distant regions, with heavy rains in the Amazon Region, and severe cold in the Northern Hemisphere. In a relatively recent period of the Earth’s history, from 100 thousand years ago to our times, abrupt temperature oscillations [...] -

Environmental equation
Published on August 12, 2009August 12, 2009 By Fábio de Castro, in Atibaia, Brazil FAPESP News – Reducing emissions of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming is one of the main goals behind the international effort to replace fossil fuels with clean energy sources, such as ethanol made from sugarcane.
