Esther I. Hamburger is Associate Professor at the Dept of Cinema, Radio and Television of the School of Communications and Arts of the University of São Paulo.

In 2015 she has been a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Latin American Studies of Harvard University (EUA).

She has PhD in Anthropology from the University of Chicago, a MA in Sociology and a BA in Social Sciences from the Division of Philosophy, Human Sciences, and Literature of University of São Paulo. She has done a Post Doc at the Population Research Center of the University of Texas, Austin with a Mellon Foundation Fellowship. She has also been a Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

She works at the intersection of Anthropology and Cinema and Television Studies in topics related to culture and politics, gender, criticism, theory, aesthetics, and history of cinema and television.

Her articles are published in the daily press, and in book collections such as The Routledge’s companion to media and gender, Television audiences across the world, Cultura e Sociedade, Brasil e Argentina, Agenda Brasileira, temas de uma sociedade em mudança, World Cinema, Miradas cruzadas: sociedad, política y cultura, among others. Her book O Brasil antenado, a sociedade da novela was nominated to the Jabuti prize.

She has published at specialized journals such as Significação, Lua Nova, Interim, Novos Estudos, Framework, Television and the new media, among others.
