SPRINT - 3rd Edition 2016: Guidelines University of Virginia
Specific requests for proposals submissions from researchers of the University of Virginia
FAPESP and the University of Virginia, signed a Cooperation Agreement for Research on May 3, 2016, aiming to implement scientific and technological cooperation between researchers from the University of Virginia, USA, and from the State of São Paulo, Brazil, through the funding of joint research projects.
Under the referred Agreement, as a first action to promote such collaboration, FAPESP and The University of Virginia make public this Call for Proposals for the exchange of researchers, under the terms and conditions of the SPRINT 3rd Edition 2016 (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call32016) and hereinafter set forth.
1. Eligibility for applicants from the University of Virginia
1.1 Eligibility to submit proposals within the scope of this Call:
a. Lead applicants (PIs) of proposals must be tenure track members of the university faculty.
b. UVA faculty members may be lead investigator on one proposal only.
1.2 Eligibility for the exchange activities within the scope of this Call:
a. The exchange activities associated with this call are intended to generate new and novel research collaborations between UVA faculty and researchers in the State of São Paulo.
b. Postdoctoral researchers may participate in the exchange missions but must do so via a proposal generated and managed by both São Paulo-based and University of Virginia-based Principal Investigators.
c. The proposals must aim to respect the principle of reciprocity with regard to academic qualifications of those who will take part in the exchange activities.
d. Eligibility of research partners in the State of São Paulo should observe the items 3.1 and 7.1 of FAPESP call (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call32016).
2. Fields of knowledge
This Call for Proposals invites research proposals in all fields of knowledge.
3. Duration of the project for the exchange of researchers
The maximum duration of each project is twenty-four months.

5. Funding principles
FAPESP will provide funding of up to the equivalent of US$ 10,000.00 (ten thousand dollars) per proposal per year and the University of Virginia will provide funding of up to US$ 10,000.00 (ten thousand dollars) per proposal per year, for the duration of the grant to cover research-related mobility expenses, under the provisions of Clause 5 of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties (www.fapesp.br/en/10258).
6. Proposal characteristics for PARTNER researchers:
The proposal shall be composed of:
6.1 A Research Project having a maximum of five (5) pages of scientific content, written jointly by the Principal Investigator of the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo and the Principal Investigator at the University of Virginia. The Research Project must be written in English. One copy of the Research Project shall be sent to FAPESP and another (identical) copy to the University of Virginia. The Research Project must include the items included in the item 6.1 at www.fapesp.br/sprint/call32016.
Proposals should also address each of the following points:
i. A description of the expected academic and intellectual gains of the proposed project
ii. A description of the project activities that will benefit from the exchange and visits, i.e. what is the overarching area of investigation that will be enhanced and fostered through the exchange?
iii. A description of the specific exchange activities, emphasizing their relevance and relationship to point ii
iv. A timeline for each specific visit
v. A description of each candidate’s contribution to the visits, explaining their expertise to carry out the foreseen activities
vi. Anticipated outcomes of the exchange including publications, proposals, student mobility, seminars, short courses, etc.
6.2 The following additional documents required by the University of Virginia:
a. A detailed budget indicating the costs of travel for both UVA and São Paulo researchers.
b. Letter of Agreement of the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo to which the PI from São Paulo is affiliated. The same document is required by FAPESP in item 6.2.3 at www.fapesp.br/sprint/call32016. The Letter of Agreement may be delivered after the notification of results of this call for proposals and before the grant agreement signature.
7. Submission of proposals to the University of Virginia

8. Result of the analysis
Final results will be announced on FAPESP (www.fapesp.br) and the University of Virginia (www.virginia.edu/vpr/) web portals and by means of a communication to the interested PIs.
9. Contract for selected projects by PARTNER
All selected proposals will be subject to university policies on the conduct of research, intellectual property, and international travel.
10. Grant cancellation
The University of Virginia may cancel funding of a UVA researcher, if, during the grant timeframe, a fact is of sufficient gravity to justify cancellation, at the discretion of the Vice President for Research, without prejudice of any other appropriate actions.
