Received his Bachelor's degree in Physics - Harvard University (1983), Master's degree in Physics - Harvard University (1983) and PhD in Physics - University of California at Berkeley (1988). He is currently a full professor at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at São Paulo State University (UNESP) and Director of the ICTP South American Institute for Fundamental Research.
His general research area is Theoretical Physics with specialization in Superstring Theory and Supersymmetry. Awarded the TWAS Physics Prize in 2009 for his research on covariant quantization of the superstring. Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the São Paulo Academy of Sciences. Research coordinator of IFT-UNESP since 2004 and member of the International String Theory Advisory Council since 2007.
