Rubens Caram Jr. holds a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) (1981), where he also earned a Master's degree (1983) and Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering (1988).

Since 1984, he has been a professor at the School of Mechanical Engineering, UNICAMP, where he became a Full Professor in 2001. He has a Productivity Research Fellow from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) since 1987, currently at level 1B. 

From 1989 to 1990, he was a visiting researcher at Clarkson University, USA and a visiting professor at the Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain in 2010. He served as a member of the Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Committee of the CNPq, from 2007 to 2012 and from 2015 to 2018. He served as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Dean of Graduate Studies in the School of Mechanical Engineering at UNICAMP. He also served as President of the Brazilian Crystals Growth Society.

He is a member of the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS), member of the Advisory Board of the Journal of Materials Research and Technology. His research work is connected with Materials Engineering, mainly physical metallurgy.
