Master in Public Health (1975) by the School of Public Health – University of Michigan and research fellow in Endocrinology (1975-6) in the Medical School – University of Michigan. PhD (1981) in Medicine (Clinical Endocrinology) by the Escola Paulista de Medicina/UNIFESP. Post-doctoral program (1982-3) in Clinical Epidemiology - University of Texas at San Antonio supported by FAPESP grant. Full professor (1989) in Clinical Preventive Medicine at the Escola Paulista de Medicina/UNIFESP. Full professor (1999) in Social Medicine by the FMRP-USP.
Former diretor of the National Division of Non-Communicable Diseases (1985-6) of the Brazilian Ministry of Health and coordinator of the Adult and Elderly Health Care Program of the Department of Health of the State of São Paulo. Coordinator of the “Multicenter Study about Prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus in Brazil”, supported by FAPESP, CNPq, Ministry of Health and PAHO, carried out in the 1984-6 period.
Senior Collaborating Professor in the Department of Social Medicine since 2014 and advisor (master and doctoral degree) in the Post-Graduate Program in Community Health of the FMRP-USP. Coordinator of the Ethics Committee of the School Health Center of the FMRP-USP since 2005.
Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Sate of São Paulo and has a productivity grant from CNPq, level 1B.
Experience in Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology of non-communicable diseases, mainly in diabetes mellitus and its complications, arterial hypertension, metabolic syndrome, nutritional transition, health in indigenous groups, health in migrant populations (Japanese-Brazilians) and primary health care.
