Maria de Fátima Morethy Couto has a PhD in History of Art from the University of Paris I - Panthéon/Sorbonne. She is an Associate Professor at the University of Campinas (Unicamp) and currently holds a research productivity fellowship (level 1D) from the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).

She was head of the Department of Fine Arts (2003-2007), Deputy Director of the Arts Institute (2007-2011), Director of the Museum of Visual Arts of Unicamp (2012-2014) and Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Visual Arts (2017-2021).

She was also President of the Brazilian Committee of Art History (CBHA) from 2010 to 2013 and member of the Board of the International Art History Committee (CIHA) from 2012 to 2016. From October 2014 to September 2015 she was a visiting academic at the University of Arts, London, with a grant from FAPESP, and was a chercheur invité at the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art (INHA) in Paris during the months of June and July 2015.

She is head of the research group Modos de ver, exibir e compreender and chief-editor of MODOS Art Journal (ISSN 2526-2963). She has published ABCdaire Cézanne (Flammarion, 1995); Por uma vanguarda nacional: a crítica brasileira em busca de uma identidade artística – 1940/1960 (Editora da Unicamp, 2004), as well as articles on Brazilian and Latin American avant-gardes and postwar abstractions.

She has co-edited five anthologies: Arte e suas instituições (Zouk, 2012), Espaços da Arte Contemporânea (Alameda, 2013), Histórias da arte em exposições: modos de ver e de exibir no Brasil (Rio Books, 2016), Histórias da arte em coleções: modos de ver e exibir em Brasil e Portugal (Rio Books, 2016) and Histórias da arte em museus (RioBooks, 2020).
