FAPESP participates in international call for research on non-communicable diseases focusing on adolescents and young adults Versão em português

New call by the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases will support implementation research proposals.

FAPESP announces participation in a call for proposals launched by the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD), an association that brings together research funding agencies from 73 countries. Implementation research projects to reduce the risks of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in adolescents and young adults will be selected and supported, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

Proposals should present interventions (evidence-based) for the adoption of a life-course approach with an impact from adolescence to early adulthood, contributing to increase the likelihood of good health at older ages and potentially in the next generation. The proposals will thus be tied to the achievement of one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — “reducing premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by a third by 2030” (SDG 3.4).

Projects should aim to develop strategies to reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in adolescents and young adults, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. It is desirable, but not mandatory, that proposals involve international, collaborative, multidisciplinary and multicultural teams, funded by two or more funding agencies participating in the call. At the moment, 9 funding agencies have confirmed their participation in the Call.

While only qualified researchers can apply for this funding opportunity, collaboration with stakeholders such as community and patient groups, local policymakers, public and clinical health professionals, NGOs and others whose organisations or communities might benefit from the research, is essential. GACD has created a new find-a-collaborator tool to facilitate new partnerships.

Implementation Research

Implementation research is a relatively young discipline and the GACD is committed to increasing research capacity in this field among researchers, health professionals and public health leaders through skill building, knowledge sharing and networking. For more information on implementation research, including links to writing an excellent proposal, visit the GACD e-Hub.

FAPESP Participation – Thematic Projects

In this round, submissions must follow the rules and guidelines of the FAPESP Research Assistance Program – Thematic Project. FAPESP will support a maximum of three projects within the scope of this call and, for this purpose, it has reserved resources of R$ 1.5 million.

Researchers interested in participating in the call should consult FAPESP regarding their eligibility before starting the project's preparation. Only researchers considered eligible may submit proposals. The eligibility rules correspond to those applied for the Research Assistance – Thematic Project modality. Consultations will be received by March 15, 2022

The opportunity is open to researchers linked to higher education or research institutions in the state of São Paulo. If international teams are formed, the researcher responsible for the foreign team, financed by the respective funding agency, must register as a collaborator in the proposal sent by the researcher from the state of São Paulo to FAPESP.

The guidelines for the participation of researchers from the State of São Paulo are in fapesp.br/15233. International Opportunity Announcement is available in www.gacd.org/funding/current-call-for-applications/common-risk-factors.

GACD

This is the fourth time FAPESP has participated in a GACD call. Based in London, the association brings together research funding agencies on chronic non-communicable diseases in several countries. The alliance coordinates and supports research activities that focus on the prevention and treatment of chronic non-communicable diseases on a global scale – which account for about 60% of deaths worldwide, according to the organization – especially in low- or middle-income countries with more vulnerable populations.

Alliance members are FAPESP, the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, the Institutes of Health Research of Canada, the Academy of Medical Sciences of China, the Medical Research Council of the United Kingdom, the Japan Medical Research Agency, the General Directorate for Research and Innovation of the European Commission, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the United States.
