Specific requests for proposal submissions from researchers of the Delft University of Technology

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is committed to collaborating with other research institutions to maximize resources, facilitate research, and accelerate understanding for fundamental and applied research in areas including but not limited to energy, water (including coastal management), smart mobility and infrastructure and aerospace engineering.

FAPESP and TU Delft signed a Cooperation Agreement for Research on July 23 rd, 2018, aiming to implement scientific and technological cooperation between researchers from TU Delft, the Netherlands, and from the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, through the funding of joint research projects.

Under the referred Agreement, as a continuation of this fruitful collaboration, FAPESP and TU Delft make public this Call for Proposals for the organization of workshops and the exchange of researchers under the terms and conditions of the SPRINT 2022 (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call12022) and hereinafter set forth.

1. Eligibility from TU Delft side

1.1. Eligibility to submit proposals for workshops within the scope of this Call :

a. Applicants must be academic staff at Delft University of Technology with a contract of employment for the full length of the proposed project.

1.2. Eligibility for the exchange activities within the scope of this Call

a. Academic staff with a contract of employment for the full length of the proposed project. Exchange activities led by academic staff could include post-doctoral or doctoral fellows.

b. Participating TU Delft post-doctoral or doctoral fellows must hold a research position during the planned exchange mission at TU Delft.

c. Considering the principle of reciprocity, FAPESP may either support doctoral students from São Paulo state to take part in the scientific missions. In this case, the doctoral student(s) must have an ongoing fellowship during the planned exchange mission to the partner institution.

Note:

• Eligibility of research partners in the State of São Paulo should observe the items 3.1 and 4.2 of FAPESP call (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call12022).

2. Fields of knowledge

This Call for Proposals invites research proposals in all fields of knowledge.

3. Duration of the project for the exchange of researchers

The maximum duration of each project is 1 year.

Note:

• Proposals to this call should observe item 3.1 and 3.3 of FAPESP eligibility rules (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call12022): this proposal must be linked to an ongoing research project (see item 3.1) which must have a minimum of six months’ duration left by the scheduled beginning of the mobility project. Please refer to such a project in the application.

5. Funding principles

5.1. FAPESP will provide funding of up to the equivalent of Euro 7.500 (seven thousand five hundred euro) per proposal per year and TU Delft will provide funding of up to Euro 7.500 (seven thousand five hundred euro) per proposal per year, for the duration of the grant to cover research-related mobility and/or workshop expenses (see details below), under the provisions of Clause 5 of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties (www.fapesp.br/en/11974).

5.2. FAPESP and TU Delft will fund a maximum of 4 approved proposals under this call.

5.3. The funding is provided on the basis that it will be used as catalytic funding for the establishment of an international research collaboration that has the potential to develop further, beyond the lifetime of the grant, and ideally leverage external funding.

5.4. Activities eligible for funding by TU Delft:

a. Academic mobility between Delft and the State of São Paulo

b. Travel expenses based on economy class

c. Contribution to workshop costs (rental location, etc.)

d. Accommodation and subsistence costs

5.5. The following restrictions apply on the use of funding listed in 5.4:

Conferences/workshops: costs to organise and hold a conference or workshop shall not exceed 50% of the overall budget (excluding travel and accommodation of participants)

5.6. Applications Activities that will not be considered for funding:

a. An individual staff member’s research projects, unless it can be justified as catalytic funding for the establishment of an international research collaboration with the prospect of external funding;

b. Website development;

c. Salaries or salary supplementation or honorarium;

d. Scholarship for students;

e. Course fees for international students;

f. Entertainment costs;

g. Computers, including laptops & iPads

6. Proposal characteristics for TU Delft researchers:

The proposal shall be composed of:

6.1 Research Project having a maximum of 5 pages including one (1) page of scientific content , written in English jointly by the Principal Investigator at the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo and the Principal Investigator at the TU Delft. One copy of the Research Project shall be sent to FAPESP and an identical copy to the TU Delft.

The Research Project must include the following:

a. A substantive description of the workshop activities, emphasizing their purpose and relevance for (future) joint research;

OR

b. Detailed schedule of the exchange missions to be carried out by the TU Delft team at the São Paulo institution and the São Paulo team at TU Delft, considering the limit of missions and funding established in this Call;

AND

c. Performance indicators for the planned activities, indicating the expected results and a time schedule;

d. A description of each candidate’s contribution to the mission, explaining their expertise to carry out the foreseen activities;

e. Foreseen actions that will add to the impact of the exchange or workshop for TU Delft and for the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo, e.g. by means of seminars, short courses or visits, etc.;

f. Description of how the Principal Investigators in São Paulo and in the TU Delft intend to prepare a joint research project, resulting from the workshop or exchange activities developed from the proposal submitted in this Call, to be submitted to research funding agencies accessible in their regions in order to create a medium-long-term collaboration (up to one page).

6.2. The following additional documents are required from TU Delft:

a. Short CVs (2 pages max) of all Principal Investigators involved in the proposal.

b. A support letter from the Academic Director or Dean of the Institute or Faculty involved at TU Delft.

c . A budget break-down for the proposal

7. Submission of proposals to TU Delft

The completed application should be saved as a single PDF file, which is to be sent before the deadline to SPRINT-CPA@tudelft.nl.

8. Result of the selection procedure

The results will be announced on FAPESP (www.fapesp.br) and TU Delft web portals and by means of a communication to the applying PIs and contact persons indicated.

9. Grant letter for selected projects by TU Delft

9.1 Selected proposals will subject to the conditions set forth in the letter of award of TU Delft.

9.2 Letter of Agreement of the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo to which the PI from São Paulo is affiliated. The same document is required by FAPESP in item 11.2 at www.fapesp.br/sprint/call12022. Upon notification of award, TU Delft will initiate the Letter of Agreement with the Host institution in Brazil.

10. Grant cancellation

FAPESP or TU Delft may cancel funding if, during the grant timeframe, a significant event justifies its cancellation in the assessment of the Joint Steering Committee, without prejudice of any other appropriate actions.

12. Data protection

Delft University of Technology is committed to data protection (EU GDPR Regulation EU2016/679, ‘Algemene Verordening Gegevensbescherming’ Law implemented by 25 May 2018).

As part of the process of applying for support under this call for proposals, you are asked to provide the following personal data: name, position at TU Delft, group/Department/Faculty, employment situation: whether permanent, or if not permanent end date of current employment contract, and a CV of maximum two pages.

The personal data you have provided in the application to this call for proposals will be processed at TU Delft and transferred to FAPESP (Brazil) as necessary step for the purpose of joint analysis and evaluation of the received proposals, granting, and follow-up of the granted proposals. Data will be treated as confidential and will not be transferred to other third parties besides TU Delft and FAPESP. Information on granted proposals will be announced on the programme website (see section 8 above).

Data will be held for a period of maximum five years after the deadline of the call for proposals. After that period, all personal data will be destroyed.

13. Research Networking Tool

FAPESP: The Virtual Library (www.bv.fapesp.br/en/) includes FAPESP’s database of awarded research grants and scholarships. In it, you may search for information on grants and fellowships funded by FAPESP, including abstracts as well the name of participating researchers and their institutions. The Virtual Library includes an interface that allows contacting FAPESP-funded researchers by sending them a message.
