FAPESP participates in international call on non-communicable diseases focusing on cities Versão em português
New call for proposals with the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases will support implementation research proposals working on factors that make disadvantaged populations vulnerable, such as social inequality, rapid urbanization and climate change.
FAPESP announces participation in a call for proposals launched by the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD), an association that brings together research funding agencies from 73 countries.
The projects should aim to develop strategies to reduce risk factors for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in cities in populations disadvantaged globally, as well as related health inequities – in the context of this funding call, 'cities' include urban centers, informal settlements and slums and periurban areas.
The proposer shall select one or more cities where the research will be carried out, adapting to the context of the populations contemplated the premises of evidence-based interventions; such interventions should be a reference in studies aimed at reducing the risk of NCDs in cities and focus on three themes: behavioral change, modification of the built environment and improved access to primary and secondary prevention services.
The projects are expected to provide municipal leaders with global policy and practice recommendations that promote population health in an equitably and environmentally sustainable manner, while addressing the challenges of rapid urbanization, growing social inequalities and climate change. The call is tied to the achievement of one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: "reducing premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by a third by 2030" (SDGs 3.4).
It is desirable, but not mandatory, that proposals involve international, collaborative, multidisciplinary and multicultural teams, funded by two or more funding agencies participating in the call. At the moment, 10 funding agencies have confirmed their participation in the Call.
While only qualified researchers can apply for this funding opportunity, collaboration with stakeholders such as community and patient groups, local policymakers, public and clinical health professionals, NGOs and others whose organisations or communities might benefit from the research, is essential. GACD has made available a find-a-collaborator tool to facilitate new partnerships.
Implementation research projects to reduce the risks of NCDs in adolescents and young adults will be selected and supported, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
Proposals should present interventions (evidence-based) for the adoption of a life-course approach with an impact from adolescence to early adulthood, contributing to increase the likelihood of good health at older ages and potentially in the next generation. The proposals will thus be tied to the achievement of one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — “reducing premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by a third by 2030” (SDG 3.4).
FAPESP Participation – Thematic Projects
Researchers interested in participating in the call should consult FAPESP regarding their eligibility before starting the project's preparation. Only researchers considered eligible may submit proposals. The eligibility rules correspond to those applied for the Research Assistance – Thematic Project modality. Consultations will be received by May 18, 2023.
The opportunity is open to researchers linked to higher education or research institutions in the state of São Paulo. If international teams are formed, the researcher responsible for the foreign team, financed by the respective funding agency, must register as a collaborator in the proposal sent by the researcher from the state of São Paulo to FAPESP.

GACD
This is the fifth time FAPESP has participated in a GACD call. Based in London, the association brings together research funding agencies on chronic non-communicable diseases in several countries. The alliance coordinates and supports research activities that focus on the prevention and treatment of chronic non-communicable diseases on a global scale – which account for about 60% of deaths worldwide, according to the organization – especially in low- or middle-income countries with more vulnerable populations.
Alliance members are FAPESP, the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, the Institutes of Health Research of Canada, the Medical Research Council of the United Kingdom, the Japan Medical Research Agency, the General Directorate for Research and Innovation of the European Commission, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the United States.
