Specific requests for proposal submissions Miguel Hernández University of Elche

FAPESP and the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH) signed a Cooperation Agreement for Research on June 12, 2018, aiming to implement scientific and technological cooperation between researchers from Spain and from the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, through the funding of joint research projects. Under the referred Agreement, as a first action to promote such collaboration, FAPESP and UMH make this Call for Proposals public for the exchange of researchers under the terms and conditions of the SPRINT 1/2023 (fapesp.br/sprint/call12023) and hereinafter set forth.

1. Eligibility by the Miguel Hernández University of Elche to submit proposals within the scope of this Call:

1.1 Eligibility to submit proposals within the scope of this Call:

a) Full-time academic staff at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche with a PhD degree and employment contracts that run the full length of the proposed project.

b) The proposal must have only one PI from each side. Other team members are allowed to participate as co-investigators, provided they comply with the requirements for the exchange activities; see item 1.2 below.

1.2 Eligibility for the exchange activities within the scope of this Call

a) Besides the proponent, team members could also be eligible if they are academic staff at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche with a PhD degree and employment contracts that run the full length of the proposed project, and these include post-doctoral researchers. Exceptionally, doctoral candidates who are working towards their PhDs during the full length of the proposed project could also be eligible.

Note:

a. Proposals must aim to respect the principle of reciprocity regarding academic qualifications of those who take part in the exchange activities.

b. Eligibility of research by the UMH in the State of São Paulo should observe items 3.1 and 4.2 of the FAPESP call (fapesp.br/sprint/call12023).

2. Fields of knowledge

This Call for Proposals invites research proposals in all fields of knowledge.

3. Duration of the project for the exchange of researchers

The maximum duration of each project is 15 months.

5. Funding principles

5.1. FAPESP will provide funding of up to the equivalent of €10,000.00 (ten thousand euros) per proposal and the UMH will provide funding of up to €10,000.00 (ten thousand euros) per proposal, for the duration of the grant to cover research-related mobility expenses, under the provisions of Clause 5 of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties (fapesp.br/en/8615).

5.2. FAPESP and the UMH will fund a maximum of 3 approved proposals.

5.3. FAPESP will provide the selected proposals with funds for travel (airplane tickets), health insurance, and living allowances for researchers from the State of São Paulo who visit the Miguel Hernández University of Elche.

5.4. The Miguel Hernandez of University Elche will provide the selected projects with funds for (economy) travel and living expenses associated with the research project whilst on exchange. For more details, visit: https://internacional.umh.es/internacionalizacion/sprint/

The financeable items are:

a. Airplane tickets

b. Health insurance

c. Per diems

5.5. Briefly: basic research costs (staff and equipment) on both sides of the research project will not be funded from this scheme, but must be secured from other sources. Please note that the following items are not eligible for funding under this scheme:

· Participant salary and associated costs will not be covered

· Proposals based purely on study and training will not be funded

  • Student fees / tuition / scholarships

· Indirect costs, overhead, and bench fees associated with internal research facilities

  • Equipment
  • Venue hire costs
  • Publication costs

6. Proposal characteristics for UMH researchers:

Applicants from the UMH must submit the following:

6.1. A Research Project having a maximum of five (5) pages of scientific content, written in English jointly by the Principal Investigator at the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo and the Principal Investigator at the UMH. One copy of the Research Project shall be sent to FAPESP and an identical copy to the UMH.

As described at fapesp.br/sprint/call12023, the Research Project must include the following items:

a. A substantive description of the exchange activities, emphasizing their relevance. The proposal must state clearly how the exchange activities to be carried out by each team will contribute to the ongoing research project funded by FAPESP and to the research being carried by the partner researcher at the UMH;

b. Detailed schedule of the exchange missions to be carried out by the partner team at the São Paulo institution and the São Paulo team at the UMH;

c. Performance indicators for the planned activities, indicating the expected results. Define the milestones to reach in relation to the planned objectives for both 2023 and 2024, indicating the expected results;

d. A description of each candidate’s contribution to the mission, explaining their expertise to carry out the foreseen activities;

e. Foreseen actions that will add to the impact of the exchange for the UMH and for the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo, e.g., by means of seminars, short courses, etc.;

f. Description of how the Principal Investigators at São Paulo and at the UMH intend to prepare a joint research project, resulting from the exchange activities developed from the proposal submitted in this Call, to be submitted to research funding agencies accessible in their regions to create medium- to long-term collaboration (up to one page).

6.2. Besides the research project, UMH applicants must also include:

a. Approval by the Department Head or Institute or whoever takes their place;

b. Detailed budget (trip, accommodations, etc.), for both 2023 as well as 2024, including the contribution/co-financing by the collaborating partner.

c. Written statement of support for the project by the cooperation partner.

7. Submission of proposals to the UMH

Applications (ADDENDUM II) must be submitted, duly completed and signed via submission of the application available at https://internacional.umh.es/internacionalizacion/sprint/ and addressed to the Service of International Relations, Development Cooperation and Volunteerism, at the registry offices of the UMH or via the channels established in Article 16 from Law 39/2015, of 1 October, on Common Administrative Procedure of Public Administrations. Submission at the Electronic Registry of the UMH is completed via the Electronic Office and accessing the Instancia General procedure that is found at the following link: https://sede.umh.es/procedimientos/instancia-general.

8. Result of the analysis

The results will be announced on FAPESP ( www.fapesp.br) and the UMH web portal https://internacional.umh.es/internacionalizacion/sprint/ and by means of

a communication to the interested PIs and the Official Gazette of the UMH.

9. Contract for selected UMH projects

Communication to the interested PIs will include instructions related to the contract process.

In case of approval of the proposal, a Letter of Agreement (or “Consortium Agreement”) must be signed between the two research institutions, establishing how intellectual property rights, confidentiality, and publications will be treated jointly, in accordance with the policies of each Funding Agency and each Host Institution. Note that no specific format for this agreement will be provided by FAPESP and the UMH.

The UMH must require at the end of SPRINT evidence that the researchers have submitted a research project to an extramural funding agency. 10. Variations to funded projects

Any variations to funded projects, such as a change in the term of the project or the eligibility of researchers, must be approved by the UMH and by FAPESP. Extensions to grants will not be provided unless there are extenuating circumstances.

11. Grant cancellation

FAPESP or the UMH may cancel funding if, during the grant time frame, a significant event justifies its cancellation in the assessment of the Joint Steering Committee, without prejudice of any other appropriate actions.

In it, you may search for information on grants and fellowships funded by FAPESP, including abstracts as well as the name of participating researchers and their institutions. The Virtual Library includes an interface that allows contacting FAPESP-funded researchers by sending them a message.
