Graduated in Medicine (1975), medical residency in Internal Medicine and Hematology and Hemotherapy (1976-1979), PhD (1987), Free Professor (1996) and Full Professor (2001) of the Department of Internal Medicine of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Campinas.
Completed postdoctoral studies at the Department of Hematology, San Martino Hospital , University of Genoa (1997-1998). Onco-hematologist, working on malignant lymphomas, chronic myeloid leukemia and bone marrow transplantation.
He is a member and scientific director of the Brazilian Association of Hematology, Hemotherapy and Cellular Therapy (ABHH), member of the American Society of Hematology (ASH), member of the European Society of Hematology (EHA), founder member of LALNET (Latin America Leukemia Net) and AIBE (Brazilian Italian Association of Hematology). He is president of the Board of Trustees of Butantan Foundation.
Head of the Hematology and Hemotherapy Center (1988-1993 and 2006-2012), Secretary of Health of the State of São Paulo (1993-1994), Secretary of Health of Campinas (2013-2020), executive secretary of the Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation of the Government of the State of São Paulo (2022).
