Graduated in History (1988), Master (1994) and Doctor in Arts (2001), "livre-docente" in Brazilian Audiovisual History, titles obtained by the University of São Paulo (USP), and Postdoctoral degree from Université Paris I (2012). He is currently a Professor of Audiovisual History at the School of Communications and Arts and director of Cinusp "Paulo Emilio" at USP.
He is the author of Humberto Mauro, Cinema, História (SP, Alameda Editorial, 2013) and one of the organizers of A recepção crítica de Glauber Rocha no exterior (1960-2005) (São Paulo: ECA/USP, 2021), O cinema e as ditaduras militares: contextos, memórias e representações audiovisuais (São Paulo, Intermeios, 2018), Cinema e história: circularidades, arquivos e experiência estética (Porto Alegre, Sulina, 2017), Ditaduras Revisitadas: Cartografias, Memórias e Representações Audiovisuais (Faro, Portugal: CIAC / University of Algarve, 2016), Visualidades Hoje (Salvador, Edufba, 2013), História e Documentário (RJ, FGV, 2 012) and História e Cinema: dimensões históricas do audiovisual (2nd ed., SP, Alameda Editorial, 2011).
He coordinated thematic dossiers on cinema and history in the periodicals Aniki: revista portuguesa da imagem em movimento (2022, with Andrea Cuarterolo and Georgina Torello), Fotocinema: revista científica de cine y fotografia (2020, with Ana Laura Lusnich), Ideas. Idées d'Amérique (with Ignacio Del Valle Davila in 2016), Significação (2019 and 2013), ArtCultura (2009) and História: questões e debates (2003). He is one of the leaders of the Research Group CNPq História e Audiovisual: circularidades e formas de comunicação (http://historiaeaudiovisual.weebly.com/).
He was visiting professor at the Université Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée (2010) and at the Institut des Hautes Études de l'Amérique Latine da Université Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris 3 (2019). He is a research productivity fellow at CNPq, level 2. He was editor, along with Irene Machado, of the journal Significação - Revista de Cultura Audiovisual (2010-2020).
He is one of the founding members of Asociación de Estudios sobre Precine y Cine Silente Latinoamericano (PRECILA). He was a member of the Deliberative Council of the following institutions and scientific associations: Brazilian Cinematheque (2007 - 2013); Museu Paulista (2005 - 2007), Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros (2010 - 2014), Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade de São Paulo (2008 - 2010 and 2013 - 2015), Biblioteca Brasiliana Guita and José Mindlin (2013 - 2014), Núcleo Regional São Paulo da Associação Nacional de História (ANPUH/SP) (1998 - 2000 e 2004 - 2008), Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos de Cinema e Audiovisual (SOCINE) (2007 - 2011), Centro Universitário Maria Antonia (CEUMA) (2019 - 2022).
He was president of the Associação Nacional dos Programas de Pós-Graduação em Comunicação (Compós) in the 2013-2015 biennium and was a member of ANPUH-SP's board of directors between 2000 and 2004 and ANPUH between 2007 and 2009. Member of the Special Adviser Group of the International Relations Board of CAPES. He is part of the Latin American Media History Network.
