Advisor to the General Coordination – Health Sciences 1 (Medicine)
He graduated in Medicine (1978) and completed his PhD in Nephrology (1989) at the University of São Paulo (USP). He did a residency in Nephrology at the Hospital das Clínicas, Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo (FMUSP). He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Portland, Oregon, USA, at the Oregon Health Sciences University, Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology, Hypertension and Clinical Pharmacology (1991-1993).
He obtained the title of Habilitation (Livre-Docente) from the Department of Internal Medicine at FMUSP in 1996. He was president of the Latin American Society of Nephrology and Hypertension (2005-2007) and the Brazilian Society of Nephrology (2009-2010).
He has been a faculty member at the Faculty of Medicine, USP since 2010, where he is currently an Associate Professor 3 in the Discipline of Nephrology, Department of Internal Medicine. He was the coordinator of the Coordination Committee of Graduate Studies in Nephrology from 2012 to 2017, vice-chair of the Graduate Studies Committee (CPG) of FMUSP from 2013 to 2017, and has been the chair of the CPG of FMUSP since 2017.
His research area is Acute Kidney Injury, and he coordinates a group that participates in various projects with intra-institutional collaborations, both in Brazil and abroad.
He has been an advisor for CAPES in the field of Medicine 1 since 1998 and was the coordinator of the Medicine 1 field from 2001 to 2007. He is a member of the editorial boards of several journals, including PLoS One, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Kidney International, Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, and the Brazilian Journal of Nephrology. He is a CNPq 1B Researcher.
