SPRINT – 2nd Edition 2014: Guideline SURREY

Specific requests for submission of proposals in partnership with researchers from Surrey

FAPESP and the University of Surrey signed a Cooperation Agreement for Research on August, 23, 2010, aiming to implement scientific and technological cooperation between researchers from the University of Surrey, UK and from the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, through the funding of joint research projects.

Under the referred Agreement, as a first action to promote such collaboration, FAPESP and the University of Surrey make public this Call for Proposals for the exchange of faculty and postdoctoral researchers, under the terms and conditions of the SPRINT 2st Edition 2014 (www.fapesp.br/en/8790) and hereinafter set forth.

1. Eligibility from the University of Surrey side

1.1 Eligibility to submit proposals within the scope of this Call:

a. researchers affiliated with the University of Surrey who hold a contract of employment for the full length of the proposed project

2. Fields of knowledge

This Call for Proposals invites research proposals in all fields of knowledge.

3. Duration of the project for the exchange of researchers

The maximum duration of each project is up to 24 months. The project is non-transferable if the researcher affiliated with the University of Surrey leaves during the period of the project.

4. Funding principles

FAPESP will provide funding of up to the equivalent of £6,000.00 (six thousand pounds sterling), per proposal and the University of Surrey will provide funding of up to £6,000.00 (six thousand pounds sterling), per proposal, for the duration of the grant to cover research-related mobility expenses, under the provisions of Clause 8 of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties (www.fapesp.br/en/5838). Under this call, no more than 6 (six) awards will be made jointly by FAPESP and the University of Surrey. Researchers affiliated with the University of Surrey must expend the allocated funds by 31 July 2016.

5. Proposal characteristics f or the University of Surrey researchers

5.1 A research project with a maximum of five (5) pages of scientific content, with one copy sent to Partner Institution and another copy sent to FAPESP, including the following items:

5.1.1 Proposed exchange activities:

a. A substantive description of the exchange activities, emphasizing their relevance;

b. A timeline for each specific exchange mission, considering the limit of missions and resources established in this Call;

c. Performance indicators for the planned activities;

d. A description of each candidate’s contribution to the mission, explaining their expertise to carry out the foreseen activities;

e. Foreseen actions adding to the impact of the exchange for Partner Institution and for the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo, e.g. by means of seminars, short courses and visits to other institutions that carry out research activities in cognate areas;

5.1.2 A one-page summary of the FAPESP funded research project to which the mobility proposal relates, including:

a. Current and expected results;

b. A description of the project activities that will benefit from the exchange activities;

c. A description of the expected academic gains for the research project resulting from the proposed exchange activities;

d. A description of the infrastructure and financial resources available for the research project, excluding the mobility expenses requested in the proposal.

5.1.3 For the University of Surrey

In addition to the requirements set out in 5.1.1 and 5.1.2, a lay summary of the proposed project is also obligatory, detailing expected results, next steps and clearly stating why it requires expertise from both parties.

6. Documents for the University of Surrey;

a. Research Proposal Form ;

b. CV Summaries of the Principal Investigators on both sides and of all candidates for the exchange activities (guidelines atwww.fapesp.br/en/6351);

c. Budget forms;

d. Worksheet with the candidates for the exchange missions;

e. A Letter of Agreement between the University of Surrey and the Higher Education and Research Institution in the State of São Paulo to which the PI from São Paulo is affiliated, including Intellectual Property rights, confidentiality, and publication, agreement, in observance of the policies of each funding Party. The Letter of Agreement is not mandatory for the submission of proposals, but no approved project will be contracted before the presentation of a copy of the signed Agreement. 

7. Submission of proposals to the University of Surrey

Submissions can only be accepted by e-mail: researchliaison@surrey.ac.uk 

8. Result of the analysis

Final results will be announced on FAPESP (www.fapesp.br) and the University of Surrey (www.surrey.ac.uk/research) web portals and by means of a communication to the interested PIs.

9. Contract for selected projects by the University of Surrey

Selected proposals will be subject to the conditions set forth in a grant notification sent to the PI and copied to the Head of Department. The grant must be accepted in writing by the PI and the project will not commence until such acceptance is received.
