MoU between FAPESP and John H. Fogarty International Center/NIH Versão em português
The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), of the Brazilian State of São Paulo and the John E. Fogarty International Center (FIC) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the United States’ Department of Health and Human Services (hereafter referred to as the Participants):
Desiring to enhance biomedical and behavioral research and training cooperation between Brazil and the United States; and
Recognizing the importance of supporting joint research and other mutually beneficial activities in the pursuit of common scientific goals related to biodiversity exploration for potential applications in health; intend to strengthen cooperation, initially, through the FIC’s International Cooperative Biodiversity Groups (ICBG) program.
Under the ICBG program, specific collaboration focus is on collections-based exploration of bioactive small molecules, peptides, and metabolic pathways derived from diverse plants, marine organisms, and microbes to identify potential lead candidates for drug development, which may contribute to providing a scientific basis for the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity.
1. Potential activities may include:
a. Parallel support for research projects;
b. Promotion of training for research personnel;
c. Support of activities that strengthen or establish links between Brazilian and U.S. scientists and institutions, such as exchange of scientific personnel, scientific workshops, and support for the sharing of data, technical expertise, and materials.
2. Each Participant intends to conduct all activities contemplated by this Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in accordance with all applicable laws, policies, and regulations of the Participants. This MOU is not intended to create any binding obligations under the laws of the Participants nor under international law. All activities undertaken in relation to this MOU are subject to the availability of personnel, funds and other resources.
3. The Participants may conclude other arrangements, agreements or implementation instruments to facilitate specific cooperative activities anticipated in this MOU.
4. This MOU is based on equality, reciprocity and mutual benefit, and implies no financial commitment from either Participant.
5. Either Participant may cease activities described in this MOU at any time but should endeavour to give six months’ written notice to the other Participant. This MOU may be modified by mutual consent of the Participants. Participants intend to resolve any difference of opinion regarding this MOU through mutual consultation.
6. Activities under this MOU may commence upon the date of the signatures below. This Memorandum of Understanding shall be valid for a period of five (5) years.
