Environmental equation
Published on August 12, 2009August 12, 2009 By Fábio de Castro, in Atibaia, Brazil FAPESP News – Reducing emissions of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming is one of the main goals behind the international effort to replace fossil fuels with clean energy sources, such as ethanol made from sugarcane. But the fertilizers needed to produce biofuels could play a role in those emissions. The role of fertilizers in emissions will need to be carefully studied in order to understand the [...] -
Green gasoline
Published on August 11, 2009August 11, 2009 By Fábio de Castro, in Atibaia, Brazil FAPESP News – In April 2008, American researchers announced the discovery of a process that can convert sugars derived from plant biomass into gasoline and diesel fuel. Agreementing to John Regalbuto, director of the Catalysis and Biocatalysis Program of the National Science Foundation (NSF), “green gasoline” should be available on the consumer market in five to seven years and will be an alternative and [...] -
Genome kickoff
Published on July 30, 2009July 30, 2009 FAPESP News – The decoding of the genome of the sugarcane plant is underway in Brazil. At the University of São Paulo, a group of scientists funded by FAPESP’s Program for Research on Bioenergy (BIOEN) recently obtained the first 1.1 million reads using a pyrosequencer, a cutting-edge machine for genetic analysis. The next test of the machine will begin next week. Due to the large amount and high complexity of the data generated by the new approach, the [...] -

Contributions to research in São Paulo State, Brazil, into knowledge on climate change (1992-2008)
Published on February 27, 2009Throughout the world, researchers are studying the many variables involved in global climates changes, their causes and consequences, in addition to drawing up projections of future changes and creating mathematical models of the climatic system. In this way they try to establish possible scenarios and their impact on the natural systems and on the many aspects of life on Earth. In Brazil, particularly, studies on climate change are tremendously important due to the great extension of the [...] -

Knowledge and sustainable use of Brazilian biodiversity: Biota-FAPESP Program (book in pdf format)
Published on February 17, 2009Brazil is the country with the greatest biodiversity, being home to between 15 and 20 per cent of the total number of species on the planet, in six large biomas: Amazonia, Caatinga, Atlantic Rainforest, Cerrado, Pantanal and Pampa. The exact dimension of this biological wealth will probably never be known, given the continental dimensions of the country, the extent of its marine platform and the complexity of its ecosystems. A considerable part of this patrimony has been, and continues to be, [...] -
