São Paulo Research Foundation will support selected research projects with a total of up to R$7 million

The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and 15 other research funding agencies from different countries or with global reach announce, within the scope of the Belmont Forum, the Africa Regional Call (ARC) 2024.

The call seeks to address the challenges of climate vulnerability on the African continent, exacerbated by the interaction of multiple stressors and low regional adaptive capacity. Nine of the world's ten most vulnerable countries to climate change are located in Sub-Saharan Africa. The situation is compounded by existing development challenges such as endemic poverty, complex governance and limited access to capital and technology.

The call is part of efforts by the continent's funding agencies to support the African Union's goals on climate, environment and sustainability, as well as the priority areas of Agenda 2063.

Research proposals and consortia must include perspectives from the Social and Human Sciences, as well as the Natural and Physical Sciences. They must also effectively involve social actors, using participatory approaches, co-creation, co-development and co-implementation. Proposals must address at least two of the following three themes, seeking transversal connections between them: 1) Water-Energy-Food-Health Nexus; 2) Pollution; 3) Disaster Preparedness, Response and Recovery.

The total resources made available by FAPESP is R$7 million and the selected projects may last up to 36 months. At FAPESP, proposals must meet the general conditions of the Regular Research Grant modality (www.fapesp.br/apr), observing the exceptionalities described in the call.

Proponents from the state of São Paulo must be established researchers with a proven track record of participation in interdisciplinary international projects on the topics covered in the call.

The deadline for eligibility consultation at FAPESP through the SAGe system is July 31, 2024. The deadline for submitting pre-proposals (only to the Belmont Forum) is August 31, 2024. The deadline for submitting full proposals to the Belmont Forum and FAPESP is December 31, 2024.

The call is published (in Portuguese) at: https://fapesp.br/16811.
