Call for proposals will support technologically disruptive solutions for global challenges Versão em português
FAPESP will fund projects under a call for proposals announces by the IIDTAC call – International Research Initiative on the Use of Disruptive Technologies to Address Global Challenges.
FAPESP represents Brazil in IIDTAC, an international collaboration involving other funding agencies from Canada, Denmark, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and Åland Islands to support international, interdisciplinary and transformative research.
With the launch of this Call, the IIDTAC aims to encourage research that harnesses the potential of disruptive technologies to provide innovative solutions that accelerate progress towards achieving at least one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations (UN).
Projects proposed in this Call should address at least two of the following areas: natural and engineering sciences, social sciences and humanities, health and life sciences.
The project team must be eligible to receive funding from at least three of the following agencies: FAPESP, NFRF, NWO, IDRC, NordForsk, SNSF, NSTC and UKRI, with at least one of the Principal Investigators being eligible to submit a proposal to NFRF (New Frontiers in Research Fund, the Canadian research funding agency).
The call recommends that teams include at least one specialist in social sciences or humanities among the Principal or co-Principal Investigators to support the successful implementation of the project and maximise its impact.
Submission of proposals
All research proposals must be preceded by a Notice of Interest (NOI), submitted only to the NFRF by the Canada-based researcher by 3 March. This stage will evaluate the indicative eligibility of the project team.
The Letter of Intent (LOI) must be submitted to the NFRF by the Canadian researcher and to FAPESP, via SAGe (fapesp.br/sage), by the São Paulo state researcher, by 9 June. LOIs will be evaluated through a distributed peer review process in which the applicants themselves act as reviewers and assess other proposals submitted for the same funding opportunity.
Only proposals recommended at the LOI stage will be eligible for the full proposal submission stage, which runs until 3 November. São Paulo applicants must submit exclusively to SAGe the same project that the principal researcher will submit to the NFRF.
Support modalities
FAPESP will support the selected projects through the Regular Research Grant and Thematic Grant modalities, observing the rules and conditions of the respective support instruments, for a maximum period of three years.
Responsible Researchers or Principal Researchers with a current Regular or Thematic Research Grant may participate in the Call, provided that the current Grant is not in collaboration or co-funded by another agency.
On 3 February, NFRF will organise a webinar to give a general presentation of the Call and clarify doubts of interested researchers.
