Workshop on Biofuel Technologies and their Implications for Water and Land Use (13/8/2009)

O Workshop on Biofuel Technologies and their Implications for Water and Land Use reuniu pesquisadores do Brasil e de outros países entre os dias 10 e 12 em Atibaia (SP).

Funding Opportunities
The goal of this session is to provide information on funding opportunities for joint research, education and exchanges. Representatives of CNPq & FAPESP, SECyT, and NSF will give short (~ 15 min) overviews of applicable programs within their organizations followed by questions. Participants will use this information as background as they work to develop plans for collaborative regional programs.

Breakout Session 1
Group discussions- Finding common ground with respect to scientific questions related the land use impacts of biofuels that must be answered and research challenges that must be overcome to answer these questions.

Questions:

  1. 1) Which technologies would be more important (adequate) to minimize future impacts of biofuel production in land and water use?
  2. 2) Which problems related to water and land use impacts of biofuel production are of national (local) importance?
  3. 3) Which of these problems are of pan-american importance?
  4. 4) Evaluate the actual situation and desired future to minimize impacts of biofuel production on water and land use;
  5. 5) What would be the consequences of these pan-american solutions for the rest of the world? Economy, Society, Science, Technology and industry, biodiversity?

Breakout Session 2
Group discussions - Identify the specific methods and data needed to answer the top scientific questions identified in Plenary Session 2. The discussion should include the interface between the disciplines and the tools needed to answer questions that span the disciplines.

Questions:

  1. 1) Are biofuels a good solution to help with the effects of the climatic changes?
  2. 2) Are biofuels environmentally, economically and socially viable?
  3. 3) What are the expected effects of biofuels production on biodiversity?
  4. 4) What are the possible focal points for cooperative projects between research groups from the three countries?

Breakout Session 3
Group discussions - Look for collaborative opportunities in terms of science, modeling, analysis, and training of the next generation of engineers and scientists.

In parallel to these activities, a group composed of the scribes will write a document with the main conclusions reached by the groups during the Breakout Sessions 1 and 2.

Themes for discussion:

  • Discuss next steps and agree on plan (action items)
  • Goals for next years
  • Mechanisms to improve scientific cooperation
