NWO-FAPESP-CNPq Joint Workshop for developing research collaborations on the bio-based economy BIO-BASED ECONOMY, São Paulo

The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), within the scope of its Program for Research on Bioenergy (BIOEN), The National Council of Technological and Scientific Development (CNPq) and The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) are grateful to invite you to the

NWO-FAPESP-CNPq Joint Workshop for developing research collaborations on the BIO-BASED ECONOMY, São Paulo

International collaboration in science is important to broaden the scope of research, form multidisciplinary teams and take advantage of the diverse experiences and knowledges of scientists working in different countries.

Bio-based economy is an emerging field that is starting to evolve as biomass from agricultural as well as other origens becames a viable option to replace feedstocks of fossil origen to produce energy, chemicals and a variety of products. But the challenges ahead are as big as the possibilities of this new field. This is a great opportunity for Brazil as few countries in the world have the potential to produce biomass in an economical and sustainable way.

The success of the ethanol program is an example, but the bio-based economy is much more than that. In addition, The Netherlands has a strong tradition in basic science; therefore, high synergies are expected from Brazilian and Dutch collaborations in bio-based projects.

This workshop is organized by FAPESP, CNPq, and The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Resarch (NWO), which funds researchers and intitutions in The Netherlands similarly to what FAPESP and CNPq do in Brazil.

The objective of the workshop is to foster collaboration between Dutch and Brazilian scientists to work on project related to the Bio-Based Economy. A joint call for proposals is also envisaged.

The workshop will focus on five themes:
 a) More and better agricultural and horticultural products;
 b) Resilience of the production system;
 c) Optimum utilization of raw materials for food and non-food products,
 d) Chemicals and fuels from raw materials: disclosure by chemo and biocatalysis;
 e) Chemicals and fuels from raw materials: disclosure by biotechnology.

The workshop will be held at FAPESP in São Paulo with the participation of the NWO Delegation, members of FAPESP Area Coordinations + Invited Brazilian scientists, and CNPq Coordination of Bilateral Cooperation.

During the workshop the scientists will have the opportunity to point out the relevant topics in their areas of expertise as well as other areas of mutual interest in which collaborations can be expected.
