Luiz Carlos Dias

Luiz Carlos Dias was born in Balneário Camboriú, SC (Brazil). He received his undergraduate degree from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Florianópolis, SC, in 1988. He received his PhD, in 1993 at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). He spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow with Prof. David A. Evans at Harvard University, USA (1994–1995) where he worked on the total synthesis of spongistatin A.

In 1992 he joined the faculty at the Institute of Chemistry at UNICAMP as an Instructor. In 1993 he was promoted to Assistant Professor, in 1999 to Associate Professor and in 2008 to Full Professor. He is interested in total synthesis of biologically active and structurally interesting natural products, development of reactions that are relevant to the synthesis of complex organic structures.

He is also involved with Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative-DNDi (www.dndi.org) in the synthesis of potential candidates for the treatment of Chagas Disease, and with Medicines for Malaria Venture-MMV (www.mmv.org) in the synthesis of potential candidates to treat malaria. Prof. Dias was the general secretary of the Brazilian Chemical Society - SBQ (2000-2004), Editor of the Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society (2005-2013) and Coordinator of the National Committee of Capes in the area of Chemistry for evaluation of PhD programs in Chemistry in Brazil (2011-2014).

Prof. Dias has more than 90 publications and has delivered more than 130 Lectures. In 1999, Prof. Dias received the Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society Medal, in 2009 the Zeferino Vaz Award for excellence in teaching and research activities at UNICAMP, in 2010 He was elected Commander of the National Order of Scientific Merit (Presidency). In 2009 He was elected Member of the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo (ACIESP) and in 2011 he was elected Member of the National Academy of Sciences (ABC).
